Mel Gibson apologizes for DUI arrest
LOS ANGELES - Mel Gibson issued a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for his drunk driving arrest and saying he has battled alcoholism throughout his life.
Gibson also apologized for what he said were "despicable" statements he made to the deputies who arrested him early Friday morning on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested," he said in a statement issued by his publicist. "I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."
Publicist Alan Nierob declined to elaborate beyond the statement.
Gibson, 50, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone.
A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, Whitmore said. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent.
The actor was released early Friday after posting $5,000 bail.
I'm surprised that everyone keeps saying things like, "how can we judge the guy when we're not perfect?" or, "judge not that ye be judged."
Last time I looked, us freepers criticise and judge the behavior of one hell of a lot of people. And rightly so, too. There might be an argument in defense of Mel, but that he's above criticism, or that nobody has the right to criticise anyone else, those arguments are just bizarre and strange on this site.
Idol worship seems to be some sort of basic human nature.
It can be illogical in the extreme.
Geez my first post in a year, and it's on a thread right next with nearly my namesake...
GO PAT GO!
He's not just another celebrity, he's one I stuck my neck out for last year.
Don't walk on eggshells, but don't expect that a public figure can say what Mel did and get away with it. His speech was disgusting on all levels...I notice that Mel himself admits it, even if you find it OK.
BTW, I notice that that jerk Abe Foxman had a few things to say about Mel's movie...do I remember about half of this board being outraged? Yes I do, I guess Abe should have been walking on eggshells, what with all the metrosexuals around here crying so much.
I almost have a website now i guess...LOLOLOL
The guy apparently bashes Bush pretty much all the time, now he made an ass of himself in public with these drunken remarks, but half the board wants to say he's above criticism.
I understand that people want to defend someone they like and admire, but there comes a time to admit there are problems. IMO.
I still hope he'll find a way out of this, even so.
Shouldn't that be GO RAT GO
Well, I got to get some sleep, see you guys later.
I'm anti-Neo-CON by the way. It's disgusting how these wanna be world cop neo-CON turkeys are dragging America down.
LOL!! who's dragging America down? We're engaged against terrorism.
If it were left up to you and your anti-semite buddy Buchanan, as long as terrorists don't show up on your street, we ought to leave them alone.
No the main RATS who are bringing America down at this point in time are of the NEo-CON type. Don't protect our borders but get our brave troops killed in MidEast hellholes for nothing.
How stupid.
Well the logical thing to do is to prevent them from getting anywhere near America. We see how well the Neo-CONS did in that job on 9-11.
In everything give thanks. It's good that he was stopped by embarrassment and a DUI and not death of himself or another driver.
Uh, the 19 hijackers all came in while Clinton was president. Bush was in office 8 months before 9/11.
You paleos would get us ALL killed.
I've met Mel at my kids school several times and he is a great guy. He always takes his kid to school and it's nice to see a dad with that priority... Best wishes with solving his personal problems.
Hey there are alot of Neo-CON democrats. The fact remains that our borders are still virtually wide open while we get good men killed in the mideast for nothing.
Neo-CON stupidity.
No doubt about it, you know stupid.
Mel took full responsibility for his relapse and made amends immediately. He has more guts than many do in blaming only himself and no one else. Good luc, Mel, and ODAAT.
*luck
