Stephen Harper, Canada's Prime Minister, is asking a great question when he wonders why Kofi Annan chose to keep the UNIFIL forces in harm's way in Lebanon even after Israel asked for all non-Hezbollah personnel to evacuate from South Lebanon. In fact, not only does Kofi Annan want the UNIFIL troops to remain in place, but he has called for the UNIFIL troops to remain for an additional month after their mandate expires: http://www.un.org/radio/story.asp?NewsID=4888 .
My theory is that Kofi did this in order to cover up evidence of UNIFIL collaboration with Hezbollah for the past several years.
Conventional wisdom as of July 25, when the above-referenced article was published, had it that within a week or two Israel would have to agree to a ceasefire. If UNIFIL were to leave Lebanon while Israeli troops still were advancing in Lebanon, then Israel might discover stashes of katyushas secreted in UNIFIL bases and other evidence that would expose UNIFIL's perfidious collaboration with the Hezbollah terrorists. On the other hand, if UNIFIL were to stay in place until Israel's movement is eliminated, then these secrets may remain hidden from Israel and the US indefinitely.
As usual, it's not the crime, it's the cover-up. In this case, the cover-up may be responsible for the deaths of the four UN victims.
This is the only justification that I can think of for Kofi Annan's decision to keep the UNIFIL troops in harm's way now and for the next month.
OK, FReepers, please tell me where I'm wrong.
Kofi has BLOOD on his hands.
Kofi has had BLOOD on HIS hands for years!
KOFI MUST GO....NOW!! John Bolton...HELP!!
Suzy, I don't know that Israel specifically asked UNIFIL to leave. I do know that Israel asked all residents of South Lebanon to do so because Israel was going to attack, and to fight hard. Presumably, that warning to leave includes UNIFIL.
KOFI MUST GO!!
Do we know Israel told the UNIFIL forces to leave as well?
No. See my post no. 5. We know that Israel gave a generl warning to all South Lebanon residents to do so. Presumably, this warning would include UNIFIL itself.
You wrote that Steven Harper, Prime Minister of Canada knew that Israel asked they be removed.....that's all I need to know.
Sounds believable to me. Good analysis.
Perhaps some of that "other evidence" Kofi and his band of criminals are desperately trying to cover up are WMDs that were given to the Hezzies by Syria. ...originating in Saddam's Iraq, of course.
I don't know, but Koficup was dumb enough to demand an investigation. So, I think he really ought to GET that investigation, he might not like what it turns up, but he should very definitely GET that investigation.
Yes. News accounts say of Harper that "He also wants to know why the post was still manned by UN observers even though it was in the middle of a war zone. 'We want to find out why this United Nations post was attacked and also why it remained manned during what is now, more or less, a war during obvious danger to these individuals.'"
Tomorrow morning at 9:30 EDT...the confirmation hearing for John Bolton will be on C-span 3.
Pray for Harper to get to the bottom of Blood for Kofi's Cover-up of Kaytushas.
Prayers for Bolton also!!

Let me make an assumption that the answer is, "very little." Jed Babbin recently recollected his own experience in this regard:
The UN's years-long record on the Israel-Lebanon border makes mockery of the term "peacekeeping." On page 155 of my book, "Inside the Asylum," is a picture of a UN outpost on that border. The UN flag and the Hizballah flag fly side-by-side. Observers told me the UN and Hizballah personnel share water, telephones and that the UN presence serves as a shield against Israeli strikes against the terrorists.
My suspicions were immediatedly raised. Could it be the Hezzies were tapping the UN landlines, thus knowing what the UN knew? KOfiboy knew the Hezzies were doing such, and therefore continued the outposts to allow Hezzies the intell on what the UN knew (though probably very little)
It seems likely the IDF knew exactly what was up, and had enough. They have demonstrated in the past they really do not much tolerate outside interests listening in on their comms. Remember the Liberty? Couple that with possible arms/ammo storage areas in close proximity to UN posts and things were over the top. I hope if this supposition is accurate, the IDF will spill the beans on Kofiboy.
