FORT WORTH -- The two girls stare into the camera with little expression on their faces..
They are young, possibly pre-teens. One appears to be sitting in the front seat of a vehicle. The other is leaning forward from the backseat.
It is not what is shown in the cropped photograph that concerns Fort Worth authorities.
It's where it was found: under the jail cell mattress of serial killing suspect Juan Mesa Segundo.
On Tuesday, police released the image to the media. It's the second time in less than a week that an area law enforcement agency has asked for help identifying a child from a photo belonging to a suspect in a sex-related crime.
Lt. Dean Sullivan, a police spokesman, stressed that investigators have no indication that the two girls are victims of a crime. But he said police hope someone will be able to tell them who and where they are.
"We'd be remiss to the public in our responsibility to do a thorough and complete investigation if we didn't share this picture and see if anyone has any kind of information with regards to either of these two little girls," he said.
Segundo's attorney Wes Ball said he had not seen the photograph.
Segundo was arrested in April 2005 after police say a national database linked his DNA to semen found in the body of Vanessa Villa, an 11-year-old girl who was raped and strangled inside her home in August 1986.
Since his incarceration, police say tests also linked Segundo to two other rape and strangulation deaths. Prosecutors have since asked for a review of unsolved sexual assaults and homicides.
Segundo remains in solitary confinement in the Tarrant County Jail. He is expected to go on trial in Vanessa's slaying in September. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty.
According to a search warrant affidavit, the photograph was found after police received a tip from inmate who said Segundo showed him pictures of 15 to 20 females.
One of the pictures, the inmate told investigators, was of Vanessa.
Cold case Detective Manny Reyes said he has shown the photo of the two girls to Segundo's relatives, none of whom recognized the girls.
While giving the photograph to the media may upset the girls' families, he said, "Under the circumstances we need to make sure who they are and, more than anything, are they OK."
On Thursday, Arlington police released a photo of a girl that had been found in the home of Nicholas Demont Wilborn, a man suspected in a series of southeast Arlington sex crimes and break-ins. Within hours, family friends who recognized the girl contacted police.
Do you know these girls?
People with information are asked to call Fort Worth police at 817-335-4222 or CrimeStoppers at 817-469-TIPS (8477).
The seat back looks odd for a car. That's why I thought it might be the seat back of an amusement ride that has a front and back seat.
>>>A bit off topic, but I wish parents would stop letting pre-teen girls get their ears pierced and wear adult-style jewelry. Same with letting them dress like Britney Spears. That kind of stuff doesn't help when we're dealing with an apparent epidemic of these child sexual predators.>>>
You REALLY think earrings are going to make the difference between child sex predators abusing/raping/killing and not?
You have NO clue about the mentality of a child sex predator, which is a good thing. Except when you want to judge a parent in ignorance.
That little girl did not look in any way adult because of some small (actually tasteful) earrings.
BTW, this comes from a mother who monitors STRICTLY what my daughters wear. Britney Spears clothing, yes. That is out of bounds I feel, but only because you are teaching the girl to focus on looking like you put out. But as far as enticing a child predator, clothing has nothing to do with it.
It's probably an older-model American car -- their adjustable headrests had those chrome posts.
Bingo. Wonder if this is a glossy?
I see
I fiddled with the midtones/brightness/contrast and it looks like they might be able to grab a partial print off of the finger in the lens.
Letting pre-teens wear adult-sytle jewelry and dress like prostitutes is not enticing to a child predator? And you know this for certain? Okay, lady, sure.
By the way, I am not in the slightest blaming the parents for the actions by this predator. Just like leaving your car unlocked with the keys in it in a bad neighborhood does not excuse the actions of a car thief, who still bears complete responsibilty for stealing the car.
Come on. Before the digital age, you could get B&W developed just about anywhere if you were willing to wait a few days or at most a few weeks via mail order.
In the digital age it's even easier - mod the image up to anytime before printing.
Very Creepy...FRY EM!
IMHO taken with a simple non-SLR camera with a single flash fairly close and to the left of the lens - note the blasting of the white girl's face and the location of the bulb in the black girls eyes.
I said IMHO.
The letters on the outfit could be "OR" (Fort W"OR"th)
Medieval Torture should be allowed for SOB's like this one. He dserves some serious pain.
He doesn't deserve free room and board at the public's expense.
For those people that care so much about HIM and his rights then let them pay for his room and board.
Maybe. Given the spacing of the letters part of the "W" should have been visible too, though if that were the case.
I'm trying to figure out the absence of a pillar post. 2 door? What about that smooth? thing to the left of the black girl's arm? If it was a door wouldn't it have a window slit?
correction: to the girl's left
>>Jack Bauer, paging Jack Bauer<<
That's the ticket!
We could be looking at the second row of seats in a minivan, hence no pillar post. By the way, the girl on the right looks hispanic to me.
I agree - I'll rephrase to darker skinned girl - that smooth thing isn't a forearm is it? Looks like it has a corner edge.
