In Tennessee's U.S. Senate campaign, a new Chattanooga Times Free Press poll shows Bob Corker (R) leading in the Republican primary with 39%, trailed by Ed Bryant (R) at 23% and Van Hilleary (R) at 22%.

In the general election, Corker leads Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-TN), 49% to 36%.

"I only know of Bob Corker what I can find in the press and on the web. Everything I can find puts him squarely and solidly within the conservative ranks. So please help educate those of us outside of the Volunteer State. The Senate is of great import to all of us, and defeating Mr. Ford should be a priority.

I hate the term RINO, I find it divisive and think that it plays into the hands of the left, but I digress. What I would like to ask is this...
- Which position(s) of Mr. Corker's make him anything less than a conservative?
- In what areas do you find him lacking?"

Corker is campaigning as a hardcore conservative, so everything he says and all of his campaign commericals make him seem very conservative. His history is of a tax and spend liberal and pro-choicer. Still better than Ford, but that isn't saying much.

Corkers ha$ load$ of $$$$$$ however...

Doggone it, a 3-way primary isn't necessarily the best thing. Corker is riding on his record as Chattanooga Mayor where he had a generally uneventful career (though he did, I believe, have some influence in the selling of a decent apartment complex overlooking downtown to a corporate entity). His record on the abortion issue doesn't look good at all. How's his budgeting sense (as if I should ask, seeing that he was associated with Governor "Taxquest").

The just released SurveyUSA poll has Corker ahead by 20%.

This race is over.

So - because he swapped registration to vote in two primaries, he is now a former Democrat? I can find no record that he ever held office or voted in a general election while registered as a Democrat. Perhaps I am missing something, but I looked pretty hard.

What this really sounds like is that the people throwing around the RINO tag are one issue voters focused solely on right to life matters. So, if someone is not 100% in line with the right-to-life coalition then they, of course, must be horrible people and not worthy of our support. As far as I can tell his only deviation from the RTL party line is that he would support exceptions for incest and rape.

I think healthy debate is a good thing, I think cross examination of records and positions is a good thing. But this insanity that has come about where good intentioned people are now insisting that everyone toe a specific line on every issue has the potential to be the downfall of the GOP.

If they all think the same, how can we expect debate? How can we expect reasonableness to prevail? If all we do is send clone after clone to the House and the Senate we will get bad ideas turning into legislation, and they will pass, and we will have ourselves to blame.

As a Tennessean, I would very much like to hear more reasons that Corker might be considered a RINO (or why one of the other two candidates are better). I have heard Corker's ads on local radio and he sounded good to me - for small government, for 2nd amendment, against gov't seizure of property, for strong border and port enforcement, pro life & traditional marriage, pro-military, etc. What's not to like?

I'd like to hear something about him on these issues that does not come from his own ads. Nevertheless, I've got some serious studying to do before August 3rd. I'm woefully behind, and I should know better, since I live near Chattanooga.

Corker isn't a real Republican, just a Democrat running in a Republican primary.

Pretty much sums it up.......

I voted in the rat primary to vote against a bad judge. Does this mean I can't vote in the republican primary? And when is the republican primary?

Corker is okay and will be conservative enough. He is a much better politician than Hilleary and Bryant, but not as bona-fide a conservative. He is at least as conservative as Frist.

The best thing about him is he is well-suited to plaster Harold Ford. Bryant and Hilleary are not and if they were to win the pub primary it would be a nail-biter, IMHO. Corker will wipe the floor with Ford. He is supremely organized and well-positioned. He has raised alot of money and has spent his time the last couple of years organizing. He is a multi-millionaire who can write his own campaign a 1.5M check.

I will vote for Ed Bryant in the primary, but he will lose. But I will not have any problem voting for Corker in the general. The good news is that Corker has not poisoned himself to supporters of Hilleary and Bryant. The party will be united behind him.

Bob Corker worked in Sundquist's cabinet. Corker isn't a real Republican, just a Democrat running in a Republican primary.

Oh, baloney! My good friend and neighbor worked in Sundquist's cabinet and is plenty conservative.

Corker is a real republican, a conservative one. He is at least as conservative as Frist, the man he is replacing.

It is widely believed that Corker is pro-choice, and is now compromising his 'principles' to gain more political power.

From the looks of these polls, it is not too widely believed. It is certainly believed by the opposition camps of Bryant and Hilleary, but that may be hyperbole. Corker has stated emphatically he is pro-life and is running on the record as pro-life in all his ads. Being from a pro-life state and in a mostly pro-life party in Washington, he will not be able to switch that support even if he wanted. Neither Frist nor Fred Thompson were considered to be personally very pro-life, but just look at their voting records in the Senate on the issue. I believe both voted almost 100% pro-life.

What's not to like?

He is not as conservative as Bryant or Hilleary. If I could wave a magic wand and place Bryant or Hilleary in the seat, that is what I would do. Not because I believe that Corker will be bad, but because I know that either Hilleary or Bryant will be rock-solid conservatives. All that being said, Corker will win this primary by 15% and the general election by 15% under normal circumstances. This year, with the republicans getting pummeled in the polls, it may be more like 10%. That is what concerns me about Hilleary and Bryant. Neither of them know how to run a sophisticated state-wide race. One thing you have to give Ford, the demonRAT, he is smooth as silk and sophisticated in his politics.

But no one is as well-positioned as Corker and he will wipe the floor in the primary and general election, regardless of how the pubs do nationally. Bryant and/or Hilleary will lose it or barely win it in a nail-biter.

You have hit on the key: $$$$

Corker's friends have a few bucks, too. Lots and lots.

First guy to promise a new coach on Rocky Top gets my vote.

Only The Club From Growth could possibly stop him now, and they're remaining neutral in this primary.

Corker is calling in a lot of Chattanooga political support from Chattanooga natives who relocated. One of them being the mayor of Knox County. Wamp surprises me by supporting him also. I won't vote for Corker in the general election nor Ford.

The GOP can keep setting up the worst possible {Liberal} candidates till the cows come home and from the looks of things likely will. I refuse to support such simply because some GOP Party Lords in Washington insist on feeding this nation a steady diet of bottom of the barrel Republicans usually the most liberal they can find. I guess it's time to take a closer look at Heyward. Either that or just do like I did Frist in 2002 just leave the ballot for senator blank.

Once again Liberals in the GOP step in and spoil what should have been an easy conservative U.S. Senate win for either Hilleary or Bryant. Bryantspolitical career will likley end this time and a bunch of RINO's in DC will be happy about the fact. Corker just had too many local friends with a lot of dollars. Then again maybe Bryant and Hilleary realize the Tennessee GOP is bought and paid for as well.

Bob Corker was once a Democrat, and not a conservative Democrat who switched parties out of principal, but an opportunist who changed positions. He helped shape then-Gov. Don Sundquist's disastrous fiscal policies (including instituting a state income tax) and tried to thwart pro-life legislation. He only recently embraced pro-life views, out of political expediency.

The main reason the RNC and likely our president and a few others want Corker in the senate is the same reason Taxquist wanted him in his Cabinet. The want him as a yes man to push in Universal Health Care or National Health Care into the hands of corporate management {HMO's}. In 1994 the GOP was cursing Hillary Care. Today they embrace it offering their version to benefit their backers {HMO's} The GOP and DEMs are now only arguing over which corporation wins the management contracts.

Yea even senator doctor bought into it by taking Blueprints from Hillary Care and calling it Medicare reform.

The GOP primary is over. You can use your gas on Election day. Or if you have a large behind, you can walk.
