Why would the PRC destroy land that they are trying to take over? The fact is, if the PRC attacks Taiwan, it could pummel the de facto country easily. However, China's economy would be hit by its trade with Taiwan being cut off. Also, most of the civilized world would bring up sanctions on China, and the United States could counterattack simply to remove a threat.

Militarily, the PRC could destroy Taiwan. More difficult would be to seize the country (Taiwan could blow up Chinese ships transporting troops, for example).
