I have not seen the individual votes but it seems likely that nearly all the Democrats and about 25 percent of the Republicans voted to overide the veto in the house.
This issue may be very much like the abortion issue. There was a time that being pro abortion was a good issue for Democrats. Not too many years ago (Reagan era) all the Democrat consultants were urging Democrat Candidates to talk about their pro-abortion stance. Repubican consultants in that same era were urging Republicans to not mention their anti abortion stance. The media and not a few consultants were shocked when Reagon openly opposed abortion. They were sure that he had handed Jimmy Carter the election.
Today the advice of consultants is the exact opposite of the 1980s. Republicans are urged to tell voters they oppose abortion and will confirm judges that will overturn Roe V. Wade. Democrats are told to never mention the issue. But even in the Clinton years when the anti abortion position was not a majority position, Clinton was urged to say things like "Abortion should be rare..."
Of course Stem Cell Research has a magic word .. that word is Research. I can get a majority of people to approve of "Research" on almost anything.
I do believe that conventional wisdom and the media have an extraordinary record of getting it wrong.
