SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA - The mayor of the Costa Rican city that Big Dig victim Milena Del Valle called home is calling on Bay State officials to fulfill the devoted moms dream of bringing her three children to America.
Make it easy for them, demanded the mayor of San Jose, Johnny Araya Monge, last night.
Last weeks tunnel disaster robbed the children of their mother, he told the Herald, it shouldnt also steal their chance of becoming U.S. citizens.
I think this family must receive help for legal reasons, for institutional responsibility and for humanitarian reasons, the mayor added.
The 38-year-old Del Valle - killed a week ago by falling I-90 Seaport connector tunnel ceiling panels - had been sending money home to her kids planning for the day theyd join her in Boston.

Bring them: No.
susie
So she was an illegal. It's come to a pretty pass when almost every accident in the USA involves an illegal in one way or another. I'd say we have way more than 20 million illegals here.
If their mother had died in any other kind of accident they wouldn't be any more deserving of a chance to come here than they are now.
They can stay in Costa Rica.
A half a million US dollars can very,*very* comfortably support several kids in Central/South America.
After having done this, the *serious* cash will start flowing somewhere down the road.
There's no reason for these kids to be admitted to this country except, perhaps, for the funeral (which I think has already occurred).
According to the article both she and her husband were U.S. citizens, not illegals.
No, she was a U.S. citizen, according to the article.
She was "legal."
These kids will be rich (by *anyone's standards, not just Central American standards) at some point down the road.*That* they're entitled to,IMO.Nothing more.
Down the road I bet we'll find out she wasn't legal.
How could a U.S. citizen not be legal?
I wouldn't be surprised by that.
If they were "legal" whey were their kids IN COSTA RICA?
As I said, "According to the article".
While you are usually right about illegals, in this case apparently not. The article says that both she and her new husband were already US citizens. I thought that he was already a citizen and she was getting her citizenship by marriage to him. Then I saw an article that said that he only spoke spanish. How do you pass your citizenship test without the required ability to speak English?
I'm not sure why, if she was already a citizen, getting her kids here was a problem except that 2 of them are not minors any longer. One is 23, one is 20 and the youngest is 17.
From another article:
Angel Del Valle escaped the mangled wreck through the driver's side window. In San Jose, Costa Rica, the oldest of her three children said Milena Del Valle had just visited them for the first time in five years.
"We were so happy to see her after so many years of her leaving for the U.S. Looking back, we see the visit as a farewell, like a gift from God," Mora said.
Five years between visits, I like my kids better than that.
What kind of mayor petitions another country to accept their citizens instead of touting the glory of their own country?
Why did she leave her children behind? Why do reunions only happen in the US?
They aren't little children. They are adults with the exception of the 17 year old. I'm sorry but no, they don't get fast tracked any more than the children of those killed by collateral damage in Iraq of Afghanistan get to come here.
When they're not a U.S. citizen.
Not many Costa Ricans living in Jamaica Plain are legal. It will all come out eventually.
I agree with you.
