I thought I just heard on FOX that Americans will have to pay for evacuation? Anyone else hear that?
To: txflake; rebel_yell2
I'm worried about the evac into the cruise ship. Too wide-open.I'm not too worried about it. Think what it would mean for any entity that dared a strike on a ship evacuating American citizens. It would be a really dumb thing to do.

That is standard procedure. Evacuees sign a promisssory note. The US government doesn't give free trips out, never has.

Yes...they have to sign a promissary note that they will pay a reasonable cost.
To: Miss Marple
Oh, didn't know that. Thanks.

That's true. The US doesn't cover the cost of evacuating its nationals out, any more than it covers the cost of you going oversees.

Agree...it would be suicidal on the part of Iran to do that. Truly.

It is interesting to note, however, that the United States is being surprisingly relaxed about getting American citizens out of Beirut. Obviously, it can't get everyone out, but unlike other countries, the United States has been slow to move, in spite of the obvious risk of hostage-taking. U.S. Embassy officials in Beirut seem to be acting as if they have more time -- and certainly the United States knows if and when Israel is going to invade. This fact has struck me as odd all weekend. Every other nation has been scrambling to get their people out and we were pretty much telling ours to hunker down and stay put for the time being. Judging from what I heard a little while ago on Fox News radio there does now seem to be a sense of urgency to getting our folks out.

Condi Rice returning with President on Air Force One this afternoon, will be briefed by the State Dept. Will wait until UN team returns from region and will meet with them to discuss what further can be achieved.

last lines from Kipling's poem
""We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!"
