Vatican condemns Israel for attacks on Lebanon VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions."

"In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence," he told Vatican Radio.

Israel struck Beirut airport again on Friday and bombed Lebanese roads, power supplies and communication networks in a widening campaign after Hizbollah guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight.

Sodano said the Vatican condemned both "terroristic attacks" and military reprisals.

Hizbollah, which wants to trade its captives for prisoners held in Israel, has showered rockets across the frontier in its fiercest bombardment since 1996 when Israel launched a 17-day blitz against southern Lebanon and Hizbollah. ADVERTISEMENT

But Sodano reserved his harshest words for Israel.

"The right of defence on the part of a state does not exempt it from its responsibility to respect international law, particularly regarding the safeguarding of civilian populations," he said.

I wonder if you can give a coherent statement of what the Catholic Church's official doctrine about praying to saints is.

Who the frig cares? I thought this thread was about the Vatican's statement on the Israel-Lebanon situation?

Leave it to the Birchers and Know-Nothings to turn this into a rant against the Papists and their foreign system of Papism.

This place swirls further down the toilet bowl everyday.

They should have either shut the hell up, or been more equivocal, and called for both sides to cease the conflict. But the Vatican is full of pussies.

Why do you have to use dirty language. Does it make you feel like a tough guy, like the rest of the armchair Rambos that infest this place?
One thing I've learned about FR is that it's easy to act like a tough guy and scream for bloodshed while sitting at your computer drinking an Old Milwaukee and scratching your beer belly.

that is slander. ive attended a catholic wedding & funerals.

Ooooohhhh....You must be an expert then.

THis statement would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad and pathetic.

BTW, any reason that you decided to turn a political thread into an evangelizing moment?

Really, just get a life.

I apologize if my anger got the best of me. I am quite sick of the Vatican appeasing the mortal enemies of Christians worldwide.

Old Milwaukee??? C'mon, I wasn't THAT bad!

I think you probably ask other believers to intercede for you to God --- to pray for you --- and so do I. Neither of us prays to dead people.

Do you believe you have a guardian angel?

But you didn't mention my brilliant and patient arguments! You hurt my feelers!

BUT you are right. I got sucked in. The whole thing was a game. psalm 2 does this thing where she makes ignorant and offensive remarks and then thanks God that she is persecuted in His name when people respond as she deserves, angrily. It's a kind of neurotic cultic self-reinforcement thing, but I got flamboozled. Good call.

Oh stop it, Invincibly Ignorant. I'm in no mood for your personal attacks, your typical MO around here.

I've noticed your MO as well. I can hardly open up a thread without seeing you angered in some silly argument.

Want to know how much I value Israeli life?

I suppose. Humor me.

I'm worried very much about them actually. They are going up against countries that could wipe them out if they wanted to.. like if they get under the collar of Iran. Syria has already said that they are ready to attack Israel with swift force if they need to defend themselves.Egypt isn't too happy right now.

I'm not too sure Israel can take on all these countries single handed. Doesn't that concern you in the least?

What concerns me is that, with the exception of US, they're virtually alone. Thank you very much Mr. Pope.

ive continued to monitor this thread from curiosity.

i see that one of you has rudely attacked me [Conservative] & Mad has mischaracterized my statements. especially when i was making an effort to be as peaceful as possible. without continuing the debate or hijack. & yes to an extent it was a hijack. perhaps i should have explained my motives better by relating it to my original assertion at the beginning. that boat however, has already sailed away. for any irritation or offense taken by the hijack, i do apologize.

in defense of the accusations of ignorance, being messed up on the Lord, mischaracterisations as third grader,
the "sad & pathetic" & mostly Dawg's statement that i would say the following in a prayer closet. & just so Dawg will know, i never ask GOD if i'm blessed. & if i do feel that i
abused, falsely accused anyone, i would apologize to the person & confess it to GOD. irritation in this context is a bit subjective. here's Dawg:

"Once I abused them and irritated them enough, once I accused them of all manner of things falsely, people began to be mean to me! I did it all for Your Name's Sake, so am I blessed yet?"

i really feel like this is slander. Flower's accusation of me doing the same has been discussed & taken care of off this board.

here is my defense:

this is what you don't know about me. i have lived in a neighborhood next to a Catholic convent & church most of my life. have/had Catholic friends, neighbors, relatives. i've prayed & picketed with Catholics in front of abortion mills on multiple occasions. yet you castigate the funerals & weddings as if they were irrelevant. if anyone related their experiences from any protestant service, i would listen & ask questions, taking their impressions seriously, respectfully. i wouldn't belittle them. i know that attending a religious service doesn't make one an expert on that religion. i didn't say i was. neither would i condescendingly accuse any of being one for similar reasons.

my experience in what i've seen & heard directly from Catholics is enough information for me to give an informed theolgical agreement/disagreement/opinion about some Catholic practices. of which some i actually empathize with & support/agree with. but when one disagrees, it doesn't necessarily make me/them abusive, ignorant, immature, messed up or sad & pathetic.

incorrectly labeling one an expert [when they haven't said they are] & then belittling them is an ad hominem straw man tactic & not a valid argument against the specific theological issues / disagreements at hand.

in the future i'll try to not intentionally or rudely hijack any thread. & although undeservedly mischaracterized, i will continue to respect those who do so.

This statement makes me vomit!

I suppose the Vatican and its ruler would like to see a prostrate and defeated Israel trampled underfoot by the jackboots of islamsist Nazis!

WHY???

This is the question every RC should be asking the leader of their church!

Right, blame it all on the Pope. What has he said that is any different than Bush really? Denouncing the terrorists and asking for restraint.

In response to the anti-Jewish garbage you're full of and in response to anti-Jewishness of NT writings. However, I do believe and grant you that what you spout is out of ignorance.

When he says, like Bush, that Israel has a right to defend itself, I'll back off a bit.

Please, stop with your false accusations of anti-Semitism to me because I'm sick to death of it. Just because I disagreed with some Christians that were saying that the Sabbath should be observed on Sunday and that Christians should celebrate the Jewish feast days, you called me "anti-Jewish." You also made that false claim when you called the NT anti-Semitic and I challenged you on that and showed there were as many supposed "anti-Semitic" statements in the OT.

Your response was to resort to personal attacks and name calling and you suffered some consequences for that. Looks like that 3 day break didn't do you much good.

I think it best that you and I don't correspond anymore. We definitely have a personality clash going here and I refuse to listen to your anti-Semite bullcrap anymore when you are always the first one on those threads attacking Christians which, as pointed out before, you use to be.

I suggest that you go be happy in your newly found religion and stay off the Christian backs. If you can't, then don't whine and moan when you're challenged.

Not to be a sore thumb, but in defense of the Vatican and also curious to hear some answers to this question, isn't an all out war perhaps a little over-the-top against 3 soldiers being kidnapped?

Israel has a population of around 7 million, if my quick search for statistics provided me with accurate information. The U.S. has around 300 million. We lost a little over 3000 on 9-11. Proportionately, the numbers are about equal. If Israel's reaction is "perhaps a little over-the-top", then might our's be as well?

I find it comical you've been signed up since April and you're an expert on what I used to be. People who know me around here, including some Catholics, were actually around when I converted and despite our disagreement on what is truth they accept that some people convert. You have some kind of abnormal problem with it.

That "Jews" convert to Catholecism you find to be a beautiful thing and I can identify with your feeling of satisfaction. On the other hand you consistently bring up my past and display your apparent disdain that a former Christian finds Judaism. What am I supposed to think?

I suggest that you go be happy in your newly found religion and stay off the Christian backs. If you can't, then don't whine and moan when you're challenged.

I am happy with my new religion but its also my desire to point out an unhealthy attitude toward Judaism. It may save a few lives in the future. You seem bent on defending your religion as well I have no problem with that. Perhaps you just need to grow up.

You told me yourself what you used to be. I don't have a problem with your conversion, what I have a problem with is that since your conversion it seems you have made a pasttime of mocking Christianity.

To be honest, I don't know how anyone can reject Jesus Christ after being a Christian. That doesn't mean I have disdain for your conversion, however. What I have a disdain for is that a former Christian comes back to bash other Christians, call us liars, bash the NT, etc.. as you have done when you use to believe it yourself!

I am happy with my new religion but its also my desire to point out an unhealthy attitude toward Judaism. It may save a few lives in the future. You seem bent on defending your religion as well I have no problem with that. Perhaps you just need to grow up.

You're doing more than defending Judaism on the Christian threads. You often pop in over there to make some snide comments to Christians that have nothing to do with Judaism. It is you that needs to grow up.

You talk out of both sides of your mouth. You've condescendingly brought up at least 4 times that "I used to be". I don't mock. I disagree. But your attitude is typical of some Catholics on FR in that if someone disagrees with your doctrine its taken as an anti-catholic sentiment. This falls under the "grow up" category.

Both sides of your mouth again. Find where I've called you a liar? I believe the NT contains anti-Jewishness. Not a bash, a sincere belief. Deal with it.

You're doing more than defending Judaism on the Christian threads. You often pop in over there to make some snide comments to Christians that have nothing to do with Judaism. It is you that needs to grow up.

Insecure Chritains that can't handle disagreement with grace deserve a snide remark. I'm not going to cower in a corner because you're too imature to handle disagreement. How old are you anyway?

I rest my case about all I've said regarding your actions. Proof is in your own words. Calling someone insecure because they challenge you?? LOL! Saying people deserve snide remarks because they don't handle your continued INSULTS with grace, ROFLOL!

I don't expect you to cower in a corner, in the same vein, don't expect Christians to cower in the corner because of you.

I'm mature enough and old enough to realize that conversation with you is pointless. Have at it, argue with yourself.

If you think what you've offered can anyway at all be considered a "challenge" you're a legend in your own mind. All I get from you is defensiveness. I have to assume, you're not really up to the task probably because of the immaturity that's on display here.

I doubt I'll have to argue with myself. I'm smart enough to realize you're not mature enough to forgo having the last word. lol.
