We had a gas leak from some poorly done stove plumbing in my apt building on the Upper West Side once. I noticed it as soon as I walked into the lobby ....I went around and found that it was coming from an apartment on the second floor, and I called the fire department and rang all the bells on that floor....

Go to the blackboard and write 1000 times,

When I can smell gas I will not ring electric bells or even touch light switches, lest an arc cause an explosion.

.

.

That's why NYPD & FDNY and gas workers knock loudly when they're clearing a building. Oh and they shout for the hearing impaired. You should have done the same.

Yes, people told me that later. FDNY and ConEd got there right away, and that was exactly what they did.

My husband had a normal sense of smell but he could NOT smell gas. For several mornings before he went to work he used his desk in the basement to work on income tax. One morning, I opened the basement door and yelled at him to get out of there because I could smell gas. He insisted that I was imagining it.

But he finally got out. The man from the gas company told me that if he had lit one of the cigarettes sitting on his desk, he would have been dead, and the house destroyed.
