Spanish McDonald's ad prompts talk of a boycott; Bergen town's mayor calls billboard 'divisive'

The mayor of a small Bergen County, New Jersey town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard.... Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive"......"The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language," Lonegan said. "And when McDonald's sends a different message, that we're going to be different now, that causes resentment."

Representatives for McDonald's and CBS Outdoor in New York, the company that owns the billboard on River Road in Bogota, defended the advertisement....said Jodi Senese, executive vice president for marketing for CBS Outdoor.

Jennifer Nagy, a marketing manager of McDonald's NY Metro Region, stood by the advertisement.

Lonegan was dismissive of the statement yesterday. "I think that their boilerplate press release is totally meaningless," Lonegan said. "It shows their utter disregard for this community."

Martin Perez, president of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, an umbrella group of 250 Hispanic organizations, said there is an "anti-Latino" sentiment behind the opposition to the advertisement.

Deborah Jacobs, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, said McDonald's has a first amendment right to advertise in Spanish.

Send them a letter which states " When I was in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, all your McD's signs were in English, not Malay. When I was in Paris, your signs were in English, not French But I live in the USA, and now your signs are in Spanish. Dare we call it pandering? I think we indeed dare!

Press 1 for english........I'm eating at Carl's Jr.

Fondly,

SJB

Angus beef? Wow, they sure know how to make a top-notch burger.

I hear McD's adds all kinds of fillers---like oatmeal---to stretch the pitiful amt of pedestrian beef in their burgers.

Jack-in-the-Box was once caught using kangaroo meat. Since it was owned by Purina, we called it "Purina People Chow". LOL!

One thing about boycotting McDonalds's, there will be no need to apply that fat directly to the hips...

If they are not in violation of the law, we have no right demanding they change their ad campaigns.

Wrong. We have every right to demand change.

It is government that has no right in this case.

McD's foreign language billboards----phooey.

Just go on being comic relief. We all need to laugh sometime.

In your glee, indulge me.

At what point would you be willing to stand up and say "This crosses the line"?

Bilingual menus?

Monolingual menus, Spanish only?

Spanish only advertising?

I'm fine with all of the above. If I can't speak or read Spanish, I can eat elsewhere, or I can work around the language barrier. It's no big deal. Certainly not worth a mayor screaming boycott to the press over.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt and checked. I can't find any instance of any such report. Can you cite a source?

I appreciate your candor.

I'm old enough to see the slippery slope in action on so many things, from guns (which used to be carried to school during hunting season and admired by the teachers) to such minor things as tolerence for smokers. The tyranny of the minority has shown how tolerance can end up hurting our country.

A spanish billboard by itself is no big thing. Neither was prohibiting smoking in the enclosed space of airplanes.

I'm urging you to reconsider.

I can't prove it, but I think you're wrong on that.

Order a small burger there sometime, and ask for mustard only (or onions). The burger tastes much, much different than if they put on all the stuff. It tastes like beef, which is why I ussually order them that way.

You didn't know? Cannot believe it. Course, they don't exactly brag about it or advertise it.

It is well-known that McD's employs top chefs to formulate their food selections. All of the food is formulated for taste, and cost factors, including the burgers.

For instance the McGriddle breakfast sandwiches---eggs and bacon or sausage between maple-flavored pancakes---a huge seller---was tested and failed for months. Until somebody at the company came across an unusual ingredient----dry maple crystals----and brought them to the chef to use as the key flavor factor.
