Spanish McDonald's ad prompts talk of a boycott; Bergen town's mayor calls billboard 'divisive'
STAR LEDGER ^ | Saturday, July 08, 2006 | ANA M. ALAYA Star-Ledger Staff

The mayor of a small Bergen County, New Jersey town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard.... Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive"......"The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language," Lonegan said. "And when McDonald's sends a different message, that we're going to be different now, that causes resentment."

Representatives for McDonald's and CBS Outdoor in New York, the company that owns the billboard on River Road in Bogota, defended the advertisement....said Jodi Senese, executive vice president for marketing for CBS Outdoor.

Jennifer Nagy, a marketing manager of McDonald's NY Metro Region, stood by the advertisement.

Lonegan was dismissive of the statement yesterday. "I think that their boilerplate press release is totally meaningless," Lonegan said. "It shows their utter disregard for this community."

Martin Perez, president of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, an umbrella group of 250 Hispanic organizations, said there is an "anti-Latino" sentiment behind the opposition to the advertisement.

Deborah Jacobs, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, said McDonald's has a first amendment right to advertise in Spanish.

BTW: For what its worth, I have been boycotting MickyD's for years due to their disgusting and AWFUL food. MickyD's is diproportionately visited by poor people in my neck of the woods. A shame as they can eat healthier if they had the education.

Why? I guess they'll enlarge their plans depending on who is the US president (smirk).

Sure, and people with IQ's above room temperature will always point and laugh at stupid boycots. What next? Boycotting Burger King because this is a Republic damnit, and there is no room for Monarchal restaurants?

"I think there are millions of "potential minutemen" when it comes down to it"

Probably closer to 20 million who love their country, own weapons, and are willing to use them. That is more than enough to quell an insurrection.

Didn't disagree with a word you said, however freedom of speech includes mocking stupid boycotts. PETA comes readily to mind, and boycotting McDonalds because of a Spanish billboard is probably as ignorant as anything PETA has come up with thus far.

"Politicians especially have been nailed---all of their sins revealed for all the world to see all of it online."

And you can check out their background and voting record
in 10 minutes. I did that on Congreeman Elton Gallegly a few months ago. He has nothing to hide : )

Yeah, but we do have the right to point out how stupid your petty campaign is for the amusement of intelligent people everywhere. Just go on being comic relief. We all need to laugh sometime.

Do you have a problem with Americans being required to speak spanish to keep or obtain a job?

If it makes the employee more valuable to the employer, then I certainly have no problem with it. Some folks even get bonuses for every language they speak. Bully for them, study paid off.

Thanks for the contact info. I called, got a very polite person one the other end, left my complaint, along with my name etc. I suggest others take a couple of minutes to do the same. McDonalds is American as apple pie and motherhood and shouldn't be involved in Balkanizing the country.

ENGLISH is the only language that cannot be associated with any one genetic race. Unlike Spanish which is only associated with Mexicans.

Dumbest statement on Free Republic, EVER. Not only is Spanish spoken in numerous countries outside of Mexico, but Spanish is a EUROPEAN language with European origins. More specifically, it is a Romance language, or a derivative of Latin.

I haven't seen the billboards but when I bought a drink at McD's the other day, I was shocked to see Spanish written on the cup. It actually did make me mad too! I wasn't sure if it was a local or a national campaign. Now that you've listed the contact information, they will be hearing from me. Not that I go there very often, but they don't know that. LOL Thanks for the contact info. :o) I'm curious to know if the McD's in Mexico have English written on their cups? I bet they don't!!

Very insightful-----I believe Mexico's lingua franca is exclusively Spanish.

Spanish is spoken by mestizos in Mexico, white folk in Argentina (many of Italian and Jewish ancestry!), and black folk in the Dominican Republic.

English is spoken by black Jamaicans, brown East Indians, and Americans of all races and backgrounds (including second and beyond generation Mexican Americans).

That was a dumb statement, Exton. We are all entitled to a few every once in awhile, however.

"Gee, I know many Hispanics who own their own businesses. I see more Hispanic-owned businesses than black American owned businesses. Yeah, those "millions of Latinos" are living off the government teat, aren't they, Cletus?"

Well, aren't we incoherent today? You address something I didn't say...with a quote I didn't write.

(Say something to make him feel better....)

Hey, thank you for your thoughts on this issue! Everybody really appreciates them!

I'm sorry, I really don't care to read some ignorant rant. But what I hear by just a glance is, "dirka, dirka, dirka, dirka." Does that about sum it up what you are trying to say?

It's funny, they cut Colorado in half, but take the entire state of California. I guess they want that lumber up north.
