Taepodong-2 pointed at waters near Hawaii: report
(Kyodo) _ The Taepodong-2 long-range missile recently test-fired by North Korea was pointed at waters near Hawaii, the Sankei Shimbun reported Friday in its online edition.
Citing government sources in Japan and the United States, the report said Japan's Defense Agency and the U.S. military reached the conclusion after analyzing the missile's path from data collected by Aegis-equipped destroyers and RC-135S electronic reconnaissance aircraft.
The missile was test-fired from its launching site in Musudanri in northeast North Korea early Wednesday local time before landing into the Sea of Japan about several hundred kilometers away.
The authorities decided that the missile was pointed at Hawaii from the angle of its nose cone immediately after the launch and the altitude it has reached, the report said.
The distance between North Korea and Hawaii is about 7,000 kikometers. While Taepodong-2 was widely believed to have the firing range of 3,500-6,000 km, its actual range can be longer, the report said.
It is not clear why North Korea targeted areas near Hawaii, but the sources believe North either wanted to show that the missile's firing range includes the United States, or because Hawaii is home to the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, or because the missile could mistakenly hit a land area if fired toward Alaska, the report said.
Wouldn't surprise me if Klintoon and HalfBright haven't already put in some phone calls....
How do you know it is a rumor?
That might have lead to a reprisal.
Well, I'd say look to the Bible for an understanding of the depths of evil to which man can fall. As for the folks in NK, I'd say the US should undertake a psyop; drop Korean translations of 1984 and Animal Farm on 'em. Oh yeah, drop goodie bags full of food and clothes, labeled "Courtesy of the United States of America".
I think Russia and China are involved, or at least think it's a good time to see these events.
Odd, but CBS early am news this week...Boston's WBZ station...said NK's missile was in the air more than 7 minutes before failing, not just mere seconds, and that it was aimed at waters near Hawaii. Both news anchors looked scared.
The 'seven minutes, plus' flight was what I heard on early am CBS in Boston the morning after NK fired off the missiles. There's a lot about this we aren't being told. It could be that we blew up the missile and just aren't saying so.
The missile failed very early but continued to fly for several miunutes.
Also interesting is the Liberal take on all this. Now they're saying why did Bush waste time bothering about Iran when NK was the real threat. Bush's fault. He's stupid, he should have talked one on one with Kim. Maybe all he wanted was permission to counterfeit a few more billion US dollars. The last six years have been a huge failure all around. That we haven't been hit again is no credit to Bush. They had no sensible answer. (This was during the discussion about the FBI's stopping the NY tunnel bombers). Not that the FBI got any credit. I don't believe the word, Muslim, was used during the discussion. God forbid we call a spade, a spade.
CBS reported this on a five am broadcast the other day, along with the fact that the missile was aimed at waters near Hawaii. Not a peep out of them since. (Both news anchors looked terrified.) It makes you wonder, though, how the missile blew up. If we blew it up, it would suit our purposes if it looked as if NK had aborted it. They'd know we'd done it and that's all that matters. (Other countries with missile know how would figure it out.)
I hope we blew it up.
:-)
After all, what is Honolulu worth compared to the good graces of the New York Times?
"Has it been reported why it failed 40 seconds in air?'
Ran out of rice.
Alpert's still quite "active", alas:

I serve. The North Koreans put out closure areas for shipping/aircraft in the region. They didn't put any out for the Taepodong-2, which leads me to believe that they intended to put a basic sat into space. Back in 1998 that is what the mil thought that the North Koreans were planning and it is still a theory for the latest launch. They don't have to put out an intended impact area and they get the propaganda effect with putting a basic sat into space. Let me know when the U.S. Navy confirms that they launched missiles at the N.K. ballistics?
1. Don't tell them you used to have an account on FR.
2. Do tell them their shoes are fabulous, and you wished you were gay, too, but sadly.....(sigh).... you're het-impaired.
3. Make favorable references to David Lee Roth and Ellen DeGeneres.
4. And like our friend suggested, bring some zin and Liza tapes. Accidentally forget the (now radioactively contaminated) salad oil at home.
Actually, according to a resource someone helpfully posted, Chia Head has 88 submarines (of some description or other) of his own. If half of them are actually seaworthy and duty ready, that would be enough to create a problem in itself if Chia Head decided to try to close Korean waters. The Seoul government has about half that many, but more surface ships.
LOL, but I won't trouble the neighbors. They are so weird, they stay at home and never, but never speak to us neighbors. When the big one drops, I'll just "live" with it.
