FReeper Canteen ~ Tell Us About Your Military Service ~ July 6, 2006
Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge | 06 JULY 2006 | Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge

Posted on 07/05/2006 7:04:50 PM PDT by Old Sarge

Army?

Navy?

Air Force?

Marines?

Coast Guard?

Why did you choose that particular branch?

Where did you go to Basic Training or Boot Camp?

What is the name of your unit? (Division?)

What is their (your) mascot?

Tell us how much you loved your DI!

How long were you at Boot Camp/Basic Training, before you questioned the parentage of the senior Drill Sergeant? How long were you in service before you realized that the instructors were right in all that they taught you?

Your first landing on an aircraft carrier

Your first parachute jump

The heaviest vehicle you got to drive

The largest weapon you got to use

Did you serve before email?

Did you have a personal nickname?

It is our pleasure and honor to be here for our Troops, past, present and future...
and especially during this Week, the 4th of July we remember that we owe our freedom to you.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and God bless you.

A gentle reminder from Ms.B:
Please, no politics in The Canteen.
The Troops need a place to rest, relax and relate, and that place is The Canteen.
Have fun and play nice!

>>So ya like plain uniforms, huh??<<

Didn't really know how to answer that question. Back when I enlisted I was young and dumb and wouldn't have know one branch from the others. I had an older brother who had served in the Air Force and one who was serving in the Army. I think I would have gotten a lot out of any of the branches but I am very proud to have been an Airman.

Mmmmmm!

Okay, here we go.

Enlisted in the Coast Guard January 1965. Went to Boot Camp in Cape May, New Jersey. Company was Bravo 57. After 16 weeks of pure joy of being degraded, (and all the better for it), I moved on to Groton, CT to continue my education. Started out to be an Electronics Technician, but preferred my real love, Guns, explosives, etc.

I managed to become a Gunner's Mate, and was sent right back to Cape May to be a range instructor, and part time DI.

The long and short of it. Enlisted as an E1, retired after 28 years as a CWO4, (Weps). I would have stayed in forever, but Warrants have to retire at 30. Someone offered me a job at 28, and I took it. I offered to come back in on 9/12/2001. They told me I was too old. (Ouch) Such is life.

Semper Paratus,

Gunner

Left The Rock and went into the Reserves at Andrews AFB, outside Washington, DC. I've been there as a Reservist since 1976 and Civilian Air Reserve Technician (Doing the same job in jeans, steel-toed shoes and T-Shirt) since 1981.

Now theres an untold story. Tons of us get out but continue to serve in some capacity or other.

Salute

when you say the rock do you mean gilbralter or diego garcia?

OK -- and remember this is coming from a purely civilian viewpoint -- I hold each of the services in the same esteem. I am so proud of ALL of you guys and gals. My bro (Army) makes some interesting comments about the other services, and it always makes me smile. But I love you all!!

There are things one just doesn't forget: and it's neat to see what stays with you after the years roll by.

Looks like things have been pretty decent out of The Suit for ya!

To: Brad's Gramma
Hi Grammy!!!

Remember when you gave me that little note from Brad and asked me to pass it along to Ev?

Well, I did....and here is his response!

"Hey Brad, good to hear from you. I don't actually get up into Iraq very much, but rest assured it gets very hot in Kuwait too. Yesterday it got up to 126 degrees, but since it's a dry heat it isn't so bad and you get used to it over time. Also there are air conditioners everywhere here, even in the Hummvees, so there's ample opportunity to cool off.

It was the 4th of July yesterday, my personal favorite holiday. Highlights included some Arab guy giving camel rides down by the PX and a barbecue. Sadly fireworks are a no-go over here because they would tend to sound like mortars going off.. a very uncool thing 18 miles away from the border. So instead tomorrow I'm going out to the .50 cal. Ma Deuce range to celebrate in my own way.

I would like to bring you some sand, but unfortunately U.S. customs has a problem with that. I don't entirely understand why that would be, i've had the stuff blown into every part of my body every day for the last 8 months and I'm just fine, but the bureaucrats will do what they will. So barring any top secret operations, i will be leaving all of the sand as i found it.

Thanks for writing- Spc. S****** "(Ev).

(Aircraft Engine) Mechanics at Chanute AFB
I was supposed to be in Jet Engines myself. I slipped the day before I was to leave and cut my hand wide open on a barbed wire fence. Lost that slot and ended up in Missile Maintenance.
