"Gorbachev: 'Americans Have a Severe Disease'"
By CLAIRE SHIPMAN
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "July 12, 2006 Mikhail Gorbachev is generally regarded as the man who broke down the "iron curtain" that separated the communist world from the West and thawed the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Now, 15 years after a coup removed him from power and the Soviet Union dissolved, he has some stern words for the United States, whose relationship with Russia has soured lately.
"We have made some mistakes," he said, referring to recent attacks on Russia's democracy. "So what? Please don't put even more obstacles in our way. Do you really think you are smarter than we are?"
The former general secretary of the Soviet Union Communist Party accused Americans of arrogance and trying to impose their way of life on other nations.
"Americans have a severe disease worse than AIDS. It's called the winner's complex," he said. "You want an American style-democracy here. That will not work.""
Good morning all4one.

Shock at Death of 'Peace Champion'
Mr Senitt was tipped for a high-flying career. Describing their devastation at the loss of their son, stabbed to death in the US, Alan Senitt's family said the world had lost a champion of peace. "We have lost a much-loved son and brother.
"The Jewish community as a whole has lost one of its bright young leaders and the wider world has lost a champion of peace and goodwill," a statement read.
"We will leave it to others to describe all that Alan had achieved in his short life." And since the news of his death, tributes have been paid to the Birmingham University graduate from many Jewish groups, describing a passionate campaigner.
The 27-year-old had only recently left north London for Washington DC to embark on the next step of what should have been a high-flying political career.
Three assailants who cut the throat of an aspiring politician from Britain killed him and tried to rape his female companion early yesterday in the driveway of a Georgetown mansion, police reported, after the couple had returned from a night at the movies.
More Info. on Senitt and his work in the Jewish community:
Londoner Alan Senitt, 23, chairman of the Union of Jewish Students in Great Britain, said students have reported "a lot of problems on campus," including physical attacks and bricks thrown through their windows. On one campus, "the General Union of Palestinian Students handed out a statement claiming to be from Benjamin Franklin saying that Jews are vampires and suck the blood of any community they move into," said Senitt, who presented the information to several E.U. Parliament members a day before the demonstration. "It was a Nazi forgery from 1942 or 1943."
THANKS for posting that all4one.
OPINION: I find his murder unusual, too.
Good Morning Cindy...still trying to catch up on 500+ posts...when I should be working on a big project...and trying to recover...via DOS...a file that my husband somehow failed to save correctly...YIKES!! Glad that I still somehow remember the "old school" way to find and recover documents.
Back on May 1, I linked to this Michael Totten post from Israel, titled Everything Could Explode at Any Moment;
Last year I drove down from Beirut into Hezbollah-occupied Lebanon along the border with Israel. Aside from Hezbollahs other miniature state-within-a-state in the suburbs south of Beirut, the border region is the craziest place in the country. The Lebanese government doesnt control it and cannot police it. The army is not allowed to go down there. Soldiers Ive talked to refer to the southern-most checkpoint before the Hezbollah-occupied zone as the border." Psychotic road-side propaganda shows severed heads, explosions from suicide-bombs, and murderous tyrants from Iran and Syria.
Lisa Goldman and I decided to drive up there and take a look from the Israeli side.
I should warn you, I said in the car. Something is wrong on the border. Something bad is going to happen.
Why do you say that? she said.
I told her what I knew, what had recently happened when I tried to visit the border again from the Lebanese side just two weeks before.
[...]
"I say this to my guys every morning: Everything could explode at any moment. Just after I said it this morning a bus load of pensioners showed up on a field trip. An old woman brought us some food. It's crazy. They shouldn't be here. You shouldn't be here."
"What's happening here is very unusual," Zvika, the Israeli Defense Forces Spokesman, said. But he wouldn't tell me what, exactly, was so unusual. Shortly after I left the country, a story broke in the Daily Telegraph that explained it.
Iran has moved into South Lebanon. Intelligence agents are helping Hezbollah construct watch towers fitted with one-way bullet-proof windows right next to Israeli army positions.
Here's what one officer said:
This is now Iran's front line with Israel. The Iranians are using Hizbollah to spy on us so that they can collect information for future attacks. And there is very little we can do about it.
If all out war erupts at the Lebanese border, try to remember just who it is that Israel is fighting. It's not Lebanon.
The pictures are quite telling.
So is the "comments" section.

"British Foreign Office Under Fire for Engaging With Radical Muslims"
By Kevin McCandless
CNSNews.com Correspondent
July 13, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "London (CNSNews.com) - The British government has drawn too close to the radical international Islamic movement, a prominent think tank here has charged.
Drawing on previously confidential documents, the conservative Policy Exchange said at a press conference the British Foreign Office has decided to "engage with" extremist Islamic figures in the Middle East.
Martin Bright, who authored a report for the think tank, cited official papers he said had been provided by an anonymous source showing that the foreign office considered talking to groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood to be necessary if reform was to take place in the region.
In a position paper circulated last summer, two Foreign Office consultants argued that G8 governments had to enter dialogue with these movements -- which call for the creation of an Islamic state -- if the West was to avoid a "clash of civilizations."
"If we are serious about reform in the Middle East, we must do business with those who are struggling to relate their faith [to] the world as it is," wrote authors Richard Murphy and Basil Eastwood.
In May, the British government revealed that it had since September 2001 been in contact with members of the Muslim Brotherhood who sit in the Egyptian Parliament, and also with representatives of the same organization based in Jordan, Kuwait and Lebanon.
Bright said this policy had also led to the government letting two controversial figures into the country within the last year."
I hate computer problems.
My method is "restart."
I hope your day is uphill from here.
Thanks.
This blog goes well with some of my recap links I posted in the wee hours.
Disturbing, fascinating and living history.
The bigger picture behind all of this is indeed Iran's role in IMHO sending money...weapons...to Hezbollah...Hamas, etc. Thanks backhoe for this "must read" article and links.
Thanks for looking- I hadn't viewed Totten's work in a while... ( ~sigh!~ another blog to keep track of... )
I don't know how you do it.

IDF warns civilians in south Beirut to leave homes
A high-ranking IDF source said that the current operation, dubbed Operation Just Reward, would be "long" and could last up to several months, or "as long as it takes to destroy the Hizbullah's ability to launch attacks against Israel."

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary

Statement on Condemnation of Hizballah Kidnapping of Two Israeli Soldiers
Today Hizballah terrorists operating from Lebanon kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and launched rocket attacks against civilian targets in Israel. The United States condemns in the strongest terms this unprovoked act of terrorism, which was timed to exacerbate already high tensions in the region and sow further violence. We also hold Syria and Iran, which have provided long-standing support for Hizballah, responsible for today's violence. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of the Israeli soldiers.
Hizballah's terrorist operations threaten Lebanon's security and are an affront to the sovereignty of the Lebanese Government. Hizballah's actions are not in the interest of the Lebanese people, whose welfare should not be held hostage to the interests of the Syrian and Iranian regimes. We reiterate the international community's insistence that all parties in the region fulfill their obligations under UN Security Council resolutions 1559 and 1680, and cease all support for Hizballah.
