Special Terrorism Summary 07/27/06
Israel At War

I’m back and the situation is largely unchanged. Rockets continue to fall on northern and southern Israel while IAF bombs away at Hezbollah targets throughout Lebanon.

24-hour forecast
Expect more heavy targeting as the IDF exploits the operational intelligence collected from the Hezbollah bunker in Bint Jbail. Ground attacks using this same intelligence will also be conducted, but as has already been seen, Hezbollah’s ground forces are far better trained than IDF has given them credit for. Hezbollah will continue to target northern Israel, for now avoiding targeting deeper areas such as Tel Aviv.

Hezbollah’s War Preparations Were Extensive
Hezballah’s war preparations were extensive in the six years following Israel’s departure from southern Lebanon. Many of these preparations were a ‘surprise’ for the IDF and have cost them. For example, south Lebanon was divided into 176 combat squares controlled from 40 scattered command bunkers and weapons caches. Hezbollah fighters were/are also equipped with advanced night vision devices and capabilities that surprised IDF forces during the fight for Bint Jbail. During that battle, they showed the capability to maneuver on the IDF in company – sized units, an advanced tactic that hasn’t been displayed by a terrorist force. This, combined with the advanced rockets and missiles used indicate that they’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time.

Increased Syrian Military Readiness
Israeli intelligence sources said the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad has placed the military on alert. The sources said Syrian infantry commandos, armored units and anti-aircraft batteries have been ordered to launch preparations for an Israeli strike. Syrian television for the first time since the '80's has started broadcasting Syrian military marches and nationalistic songs.

UN Observation Post Hit
The MSM is lambasting Israel on this but overlook something simple as this:

It was also reported that Hezbollah fired from the vicinity of four UN positions at Alma ash Shab, Tibnin, Brashit, and At Tiri.

Hezbollah Setbacks
Hezbollah has lost control of its strategic southern base at Bint Jbail – an area described by the Israeli military as a "Hezbollah capital" – and has suffered dozens of fighters killed or captured, some of them high-ranking, although the terror group also killed eight Israeli troops in an ambush.
Hezbollah was reported to have suffered 150 killed as of this morning, and another 40 killed in today's action after fighting "gun battles at point-blank range." The Hezbollah bunker in Bint Jbail was taken nearly intact. Hezbollah attempted to destroy the equipment in the bunker, but was not successful in destroying it all, according to an intelligence source. Abu Jaafar, the Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon, may have killed himself rather than being captured.
The Israeli troops seized Hezbollah computers, documents and monitoring devices used to observe the Israeli border, in addition to the "electronic surveillance equipment, weapons and communication devices made in Iran" which was reported yesterday. The bunker served as the equivalent of a Hezbollah headquarters and command and control center for the southern border.

Hezbollah Leadership Balance and Weakening
Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah is so critical to the success of Hezbollah, that if he's killed, the whole organization may fall apart. Although on paper the movement has clear lines of authority, and a defined order-of-succession, if you take a close look at Nasrallah's henchmen, you realize that most of them are pretty much the ordinary run of uninspiring Arab thugs. As none of them comes near Nasrallah in either brains or charisma (in a Moslem way), they would most likely begin squabbling among themselves if Nasrallah got killed. Iran has sent lots of advisers and technical experts to Lebanon, but none of these could expect to lead Hezbollah, largely because all Lebanese are touchy about foreign influence. Although the two decades of Syrian occupation favored Hezbollah, and thus Shias in general, it was still foreign occupation. And it's no secret that Syria considers large parts of eastern Lebanon as territory that should be part of Syria. Iran doesn't like depending so much on one guy, but they don't have much choice. Nasrallah, like most Arab strongmen, sees the elimination of any likely successors as an excellent method for avoiding getting deposed.

Nasrallah Meets in Damascus
Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah was to visit Damascus on Thursday to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad and the head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, the Kuwaiti daily newspaper Al-Seyassah reported. The report, which quoted Syrian sources, said Nasrallah arrived in dressed in civilian clothes, not his normal clerical garb. According to the report, Nasrallah is scheduled to meet with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani and perhaps with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Buffer Zone
Israel wants to establish a 1.2-mile-wide strip in south Lebanon that will be free of Hezbollah guerrillas, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Wednesday, giving the dimensions of a new "security zone" for the first time.

However, Israel's government decided Thursday against expanding its offensive against Hezbollah but called up at least 30,000 troops to begin training for duty in Lebanon.

Al-Zawahri Speaks Again
Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader issued a worldwide call Thursday for Muslims to rise up in a holy war against Israel and join the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza until Islam reigns from "Spain to Iraq." Portions of the video were aired on Al Jazeera, and are a continuation of a series of audio/video messages he has put out this year. Earlier messages were seen as probable “go” messages that resulted in major attacks within 30 days of the message. This trend has not been continued with these messages, perhaps indicating that AQ is aware that we are aware of the pattern, thus are trying to mix it up to disguise any real ‘go’ order.

At least 31 seized at Iraq Olympic meeting
Iraqi Olympic National Committee chairman Ahmed al-Hijiya is still missing. From AP: "Hostage released unharmed in Baghdad" (thanks to JE):

BAGHDAD, Iraq - One of more than 30 people seized during an Iraqi Olympic Committee meeting was released blindfolded in Baghdad on Sunday, while British soldier was killed during a raid in southern Iraq.
Nashat Mahir al-Salman, 75, a former member of Iraq's Olympic committee, was left unharmed in the capital's Baladiyat neighborhood, Iraq's Sport Journalist Union said. There was no word on the other hostages, including Ahmed al-Hijiya, chairman of the Olympic National Committee.
The victims were seized Saturday in a brazen daylight attack in the heart of Baghdad. Gunmen in about dozen vehicles pulled up outside the meeting and entered the conference center. They blindfolded and handcuffed participants and bodyguards, hustled them into the vehicles, and sped away. The bodies of two of the bodyguards were found later, dumped along a street.

Sunni-Shi'ite Jihad Update:

The abduction came a day after Iraq's national wrestling team withdrew from a tournament in the United Arab Emirates; the team's Sunni coach was killed Thursday in a Shiite district of Baghdad.

The International Olympic Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, condemned "these acts against the sport community" and called for the immediate release of the hostages.

Islamic extremists in Switzerland

In an intelligence report completed in May, the Swiss Federal Police reversed previous assessments that the domestic risk of terrorism was nearly nonexistent. The report concluded that Switzerland had become "a jihadi field of operation" and predicted that terrorist attacks were "an increasing possibility."

That's cool. I know everyone enjoys reading them. :)

I've been spending like 25-35 hours a week dealing with one thing or another related to the war... I've only managed to write a few sentences of thoughts during that time. It's neat to look how long you have been doing it when you stack up a list like that.

Yeah, I agree. Some of those long threads were lasting 1.5-2 months. I think it's good to have some sort of "anchor" update every month. The threads have been a little more active again as well, but that probably has a little to do with what's going on in the world. ;)

***New 9/11-Style Plot In The Works?***

July 27, 2006

(CBS) Al Qaeda's No. 2 leader turned up on Thursday with another videotaped rant against the United States and Israel. The White House said he just wants some attention, because Hezbollah has been stealing al Qaeda's thunder lately. But as CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart reports, one thing did get the FBI's attention — pictures on the tape that add to worries a known terror suspect might be hatching a new 9/11-style plot.

The man in the photo behind terrorist leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in his latest message is Mohammed Atta, the ringleader of the 9/11 attacks. One of the enduring questions facing the FBI is whether Atta and his accomplices had any help while in the United States. Did investigators miss anyone?

An old face from that investigation has resurfaced, and he's raising a lot of eyebrows at the FBI.

His name is Rayed Abdullah. In the summer of 2001 he studied flying in the United States and was roommates with Hani Hanjour, the terrorist who piloted the plane that crashed into the Pentagon.

While the two lived in Phoenix, Abdullah reportedly gave "extremist speeches" at a local mosque. That caught the attention of FBI agent Ken Williams, who listed Abdullah when he wrote the infamous "Phoenix Memo" two months before 9/11, warning that al Qaeda terrorists might be taking flying lessons in this country. However, no one at FBI headquarters, as it turned out, ever acted on that memo.

Read The FBI's "Phoenix Memo"

Abdullah was questioned by U.S. authorities, but he was never arrested and eventually left the country in 2002 for his home in Saudi Arabia.

That is, until last February — when he showed up in Auckland, New Zealand, with a passport. But the passport isn't from Saudi Arabia: It's from Yemen — and Abdullah was using a different surname: "Ali." Rayed Abdullah was on an international terrorist watch list; Abdullah Ali was not.

"One was Abdullah," says David Cunliffe, New Zealand's Immigration Minister. "The other was Ali. And they are different enough to fool the computer."

Visa records show Abdullah claimed he came to New Zealand to study English, even though he already spoke perfect English. Within days of arriving, he instead began applying to several New Zealand flight schools seeking a commercial pilot's license. At the Manawatu Aero Club, instructor Ravindra Siggh immediately noted Abdullah's flight time in the United States. Suspicious, he asked Abdullah if he knew the 9/11 hijackers.

"He says, 'Look, captain, let me tell you very honestly, I didn't know any one of them although they were training in the USA.'" Siggh says. "And, in fact, I am quite angry with them because they ruined my chances of becoming a commercial pilot."

By then, New Zealand authorities had caught on. Two months ago, they deported him as a national security threat.

"Three basic reasons for that: his close association with some of the 9/11 bombers, his activities within the U.S., and his activities in New Zealand," a police official says.

Abdullah was sent back to Saudi Arabia and held in custody there for several weeks. But he was recently released — and now, CBS News is told, he's dropped out of sight. The FBI doesn't know what he's up to, says Stewart, but no one is comfortable that he's trying to fly airplanes again.

"Extremists Use Holy Sites For Attacks, Hit Civilian Targets"

American Forces Press Service

NEWS RELEASE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON, July 19, 2006 – Extremists in Afghanistan attacked coalition forces from a religious site yesterday, and targeted several civilian areas this week, including a bridge, a school and a wedding party, military officials in Afghanistan reported.

Extremists began firing on coalition forces in the village of Nowzad in Helmand province yesterday. The sniper fire came from the direction of a religious shrine. There were no reported injuries to coalition forces or damage to equipment.

In a separate incident in Kandahar province, a supply convoy received small-arms fire from a nearby mosque. While there were no casualties in this incident, this act by the extremists is against the Geneva Convention, officials said.

"To use religious buildings as hiding places and to fire from them is a clear message that the extremists use religion only when it is in their best interests," said Army Col. Thomas Collins, coalition spokesman. "The extremists place no value on human life and continue to threaten the safety of the Afghan people. The extremists today, for example, said they were 'holy warriors.' What kind of 'holy warrior' uses a shrine as a firing position? The extremists abuse the word 'mujahedin.' They are, in fact, 'mufsidun,' corrupt people who seek nothing but inflicting harm on the Afghan people.""

"WMD Gear Found In British Mosque"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "London authorities told Reuters that the discovery of the WMD-gear actually happened in 2003, but could not be disclosed until Tuesday, after Abu Hamza al Masri was convicted of 11 charges related to terrorism - including soliciting murder and possessing a terrorist training manual.

Hamza preached jihad at the notorious Finsbury Park mosque, where convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid and alleged 20th 9/11 hijacker Zacarias Moussaoui both worshipped.

According to Reuters, 150 police staged a dramatic raid on Hamza's mosque in Jan. 2003. Once inside, they discovered gas masks, chemical, biological and nuclear protective suits, blank passports, hunting knives, and blank-firing weapons, the news agency said."
