AMC's "Broken Trail" was number one in the ratings Sunday night, besting everything on cable and network television. But it wasn't just the American public who loved the Robert Duvall-toplined Western-the pic was also a hit with President Bush. The movie's star (and Presidential pal) screened the pic at the White House on June 11 and sources say the President enjoyed it. "He was joking during the screening and in good spirits," says one person in attendance.

My 11 year old granddaughter asked why I liked westerns so much. I told her all the reasons...and they match up with why you liked this movie so much.

P.S. She's starting to watch more westerns AND even the classics that made us laugh and cry.

Little does she know that grandma is about to introduce her to Camelot and Hamlet!!

Loved him in the opening of The Great Santini...snip...A great part for him.

Duvall is the son a Navy Admiral and served in the US Army. He was drawing on his background to prepare for this role.

I can't get enough of Duvall.

- I think Duvall's performance in Lonesome Dove was the best thing he's ever done and I saw him interviewed once where he said that he felt it was his best work. I also liked Open Range but I think that he seemed to model his character and acting mannerism's in that movie on his previous success in Lonesome Dove. Without a doubt, both he and Gene Hackman are the best "character actors" in Hollywood today.

Many folk don't know that Duvall also once played Dr. Watson in the 7 Percent Solution (A Sherlock Holmes story) If you didn't know it was him, you wouldn't have guessed it. A Great Actor indeed!

I resurrected this thread after watching Broken Trail last night and just being amazed at what an outstanding actor he is and always has been. His career is spectacular. I went to his IMDB web page and found these two great quote and a little factoid that sealed him in my mind as one of the greats of of our lifetime:

"They should keep their mouths shut." - on Hollywood political activists

"One guy asked me, 'How can you be an actor and be a Republican?'. I can vote either way. But how can you boil it down to political affiliation? All the atrocities against blacks in the South were committed by Democratic sheriffs."

He publicly criticized director Steven Spielberg for flying to Cuba in October 2002, and vowed never to work for Dreamworks studio again.

I agree Robert Duvall is the greatest. Glad to hear he is a Presidential pal. I have never heard a political word out of his mouth and if anyone has heard him spout liberal cr@p, don't tell me.

He reminds me of my dear departed Father in law. We will go to see any movie he has anything to do with.

Awesome film! The studio wanted to give Costner top billing but Costner demanded that Duvall's name appear first in the credits.

Costner was pretty good in it too --and he directed the film.

The Great Santini was a marvelous film. It had the problem of being saddled with a TERRIBLE TITLE. There are so many movies that are wonderful, but the title really makes it seems something it's not. Too bad ...because this one was great. I think I'll go rent it.

Any movie with Robert Duval in it is worth watching. That he's been in so many great movies proves his talent and worth. Duval has had parts in more than ninety movies and more are on the way.
It's easier to count the movies he hasn't had a part in than those he has.
