That the majority of the world knows nothing of the realities of the Christian life--and more importantly, has little or no interest and/or respect for it--yet feels more absolute freedom i.e., greater "righteous indignation"--to jump on anyone who calls themself a Christian they perceive as having stepped over the bounds of what they think they know about being a "good Christian"--in a way that NO other group is faced with is known to be a fact by anyone who has truly attempted the Christian life in the world for any length of time.
It's just part of the spiritual warfare raging all around us that for Christians to say something is wrong is bigotry, but to make generalizations about Christians being "narrow minded", "hateful", "bigots", etc, etc is somehow exempt from such immediate blanket condemnation.
For anyone to say otherwise is about a valid as a white person dismissing the claims of personal experiences of racism by a black person by telling him or her that there is no racial prejudice toward black people in this nation and they can prove it because they them self have never experienced it.
I think it is fair to say that anyone truly attempting to live the Christian life would likely agree as result of personal experience that the world (those with zero understanding of/interest in/respect for the Christian life) feel free to criticize Christians' for perceived failures like NO other group in the world.
Personally I think it is a mistake for Christians to sound as if we see ourselves in the role of standing in judgment of the behaviors of others as if we "hold yourself up as a standard of moral authority". Many of the Christians I've known do not go around doing this, yet it is common that anyone who has publicly identified himself as Christian is attacked as if by hungry jackals as if they do whenever they have some "sin" exposed.
As Christians, we are not trying to earn our salvation or even favor with God, but rather seek to live according to a higher standard to serve and to bring honor to God-- but, of course, we fight our selfish human nature and constantly fall short.
The only real "higher standard" is between us and the Lord. And, I agree, any true believer has an obligation to hold ourselves to a higher standard, according to the level of our maturity in our faith, and part of Christian fellowship includes holding each other to account. But what I was referring to is the open season on Christians, which is about a valid as someone who has never even heard of baseball before being told its about using a bat to hit a ball and score runs and then being told to go and umpire a game.
Most true Christians I know acknowledge themselves as merely "sinners saved by grace", but are accused of being "self-righteous" and "giving Christianity a bad name" if we dare say we think something is wrong.
I know for myself I DO sound "righteous" sometimes, but it is generally due to a combination my own human weaknesses--I seem to somehow fall well short of the perfection of Christ every time-- as well as an at least somewhat justified indignation at hearing the same trite criticisms from those who don't have any idea what they're talking about.
