Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh is joking about his police detainment at the airport yesterday for carrying Viagra in his luggage.
"I've been racking my brain. I'm trying to figure out how Bob Dole's luggage got on my airplane," Limbaugh clowned as he opened his national program today. "I told the doctor, I said, 'Look, I'm worried about the next election, not ... .' A misunderstanding. Now, things are what they are."
Former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas is well-known for his use and endorsement of Viagra, a male sexual-enhancement drug.
The host then changed subjects to discuss his visit Friday to the White House, but later opened his second hour with more jokes.
"The people at Customs were as nice as they could be. They just didn't believe me when I told them that I got those pills at the Clinton Library gift shop, and they told me at the Clinton Library gift shop that it was just blue M&Ms. ... I know a lot of people who don't even need Viagra. [They] just look at themselves in the mirror and the problem's taken -- many of them in Washington, many of them Republicans, too."
Limbaugh was held up for more than three hours at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities found a bottle of pills in his possession prescribed to someone else.
"The problem was that on the bottle itself was not his name, but the name of two Florida doctors," Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller told the Associated Press. "He said he had the Viagra in his possession for his use and that he did obtain it from his doctors."
Investigators confiscated the pills, and Limbaugh was released without being charged, though the sheriff's office plans to file a report with the state attorney's office.
"We believe there may be a second degree misdemeanor violation, which is possession of certain drugs without a prescription, because the bottle does not have his name on it," Miller, a former FBI agent, said.
Roy Black, Limbaugh's attorney, issued a statement noting a doctor had prescribed the drug, but it was "labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes."
In April, Limbaugh and the Florida state attorney, Democrat Barry Krischer, reached a settlement in a long-running prescription-drug investigation of the conservative radio giant, who termed the matter a political witch hunt as well as a "fishing expedition" by prosecutors.
Under the agreement, a single charge of doctor shopping was to be dismissed in 18 months if Limbaugh continues to seek treatment from the doctor he has seen for the past two and a half years for back pain.
"Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the start that there was no doctor shopping," said Black at the time, "and we continue to hold this position. Accordingly, we filed today with the Court a plea of 'Not Guilty' to the charge filed by the State.
"As part of this agreement, Mr. Limbaugh also has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the state of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation. The agreement also provides that he must refrain from violating the law during this 18 months, must pay $30 per month for the cost of 'supervision' and comply with other similar provisions of the agreement.
"Mr. Limbaugh had intended to remain in treatment. Thus, we believe the outcome for him personally will be much as if he had fought the charge and won."
Why? He didn't break any laws.
And that can only be because you disagree with me, charming.
No, it's because you earned it.
They're not, they're speaking for themselves. Our spokesperson spoke in a different article.
Hmmmm .... have anybody said yet what Rush was doing in the Dominican Republic? It's apparently one of THE big sex-tour destinations, btw -- in combination wth viagra -- gotta wonder.
THATS RIGHT!
Anyone can hold Conservative views, regardless of whether or not they adhere to them. You are not the gatekeeper decided who is allowed to claim the Conservative mantle. Even jerks like McCain can claim to be a Conservative, yet go off the reservation. Rush makes millions understanding and explaining people, and I think he leaves the judgment to God.
If you watched 24 you would know that she is no babe.
The Dominican Republic is supposedly a hot tourist spot. He went there with some friends on a trip. Nothing nefarious about it, from everything I've read or heard.
Au contraire!! You may not think Chloe is that attractive, but she sure ROCKS!!
What?!
If you are not sitting with your family in church on Sunday then you can't even begin to think of yourself as a true Conservative.
Double what?!
The Christian family values inspired people that walk the walk, and not just talk the talk, are the true Conservatives.
You, sir or madam, have a breathtakingly ignorant understanding of the term "conservative" as applied to politics -- heck, as applied to any aspect of life. It has nothing, zero, nada, to do with religion or Christianity.
Mirriam-Webster's definition of conservatism:

There are conservatives, moderates and liberals in all religions, and even among people who are not religious at all. Within companies, there are managers who are conservatives and those who are liberal in their approaches to their jobs. And, of course, there are political conservatives, moderates and liberals in most countries in the world.
In politics, depending on the country and/or political movement, conservatives could be the bad guys or the good guys. Example: Fundamentalist Muslims are conservatives, meaning the traditionalists in their faith. They want to cling to anti-modern practices, and many want to force others to do so.
Kudos to the FReepers who predicted he would head off the jokes by making them himself.
you are a blasphemer who should be stoned and put to death with your entire congregation of heretics....SUNDAY!!! SUNDAY!!!!!
All TRUE CONSERVATIVES KNOW that Saturday is the sabbath.... that is how far you have fallen out of favor with the Lord Yahweh or as I like to say "éäåä" ....
Therefore I say that you are only a Republican and NOT a CONSERVATIVE.../sarc
asshat...
"I don't think the US Air Force would allow private planes to fly into American airspace from a foreign country. I'm thinking that if he tried he just might be blown the hell out of the sky.
Not a USAF problem, but a Customs problem. You do have to land at airports deemed "international" --- that is, that have customs.
There are plenty of private air terminals at many, many Int'l airports. I would presume this was one.
All that said, I have flown on private planes -- either my own or my company's or a company with which I was dealing --- over the US border far in excess of a 100 times.
I have NEVER gotten more than the "nod and wave" customs treatment, regardless of where I came from.
Rush was clearly singled out.
Yeah, I could do pills if the need "arose" but a shot is right out.
That is going to be hard to BEAT!
By releasing the name of the actual medication that he had, wouldn't that be a HIPAA violation on the part of the "authorities" who spoke to the press?
I could name many, many such liberals to you, you would likely not know them however. There are many members of the catholic church who are extremely liberal, but live very socially conservative lives (for example, they would always be in church on Sunday, one of your apparent tenants of conservatism that I disagree with actually BEING a tenant of conservatism). And they don't drink, do drugs, have extramarital sex, etc... How about Jimmy Carter? Bob Casey?
Anyhow, wolfstar's post 111 did a thorough job of attempting to explain to you the difference between a conservative "lifestyle" (which you seem to be describing) and holding "conservative" political beliefs, so I won't attempt to do it again. I think it's a BAD thing (and quite unconservative-like) that you would exclude jews, muslims, atheists, agnostics & the chronically lazy on Sunday from your list of approved conservatives. Maybe the word/ phrase you are looking for is "Christian Conservative" or "religious right". Up until a few years ago, I actually thought Rush was jewish!
The definition some folks have of "conservative" seems to exclude all but a tiny fraction of the human race. ;-)
