Cheney trashes media
New York Daily News ^ | 06/24/2006 | Kenneth Bazinet

Posted on 06/24/2006 5:58:31 AM PDT by StatenIsland

WASHINGTON - Vice President Cheney raked the media yesterday for exposing a secret Bush administration project to look into financial transactions of Americans as part of the war on terror. "What I find most disturbing about these stories is the fact that some of the news media take it upon themselves to disclose vital national security programs, thereby making it more difficult for us to prevent future attacks against the American people," Cheney grumbled at a GOP fund-raiser in Illinois. "That offends me."

The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal first broke the story, infuriating Cheney, who has been on a crusade to get the press not to reveal programs the White House deems necessary to fight terror but have been denounced by some privacy advocates.

Earlier this week, Cheney said the news media should withhold publishing stories when the government asks them to, on the grounds of protecting national security.

The White House was upset last month when news leaked that it was eavesdropping on Americans without first getting warrants.

The White House contends it's not an invasion of Americans' privacy to sift through international financial records.

"This terrorist tracking program ... is really government at its best. It's responsible government. It's effective government. It's government that works," outgoing Treasury Secretary John Snow contended yesterday.

"This is not a fishing expedition. We're not simply trolling for data. We're not mining data. We are, rather, making precise inquiries," Snow said.

Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. government began secretly looking at records from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication. The Belgium-based cooperative routes about $6 trillion daily between banks, brokerages, stock exchanges and other financial institutions. The program did not include looking at everyday transactions by ordinary Americans.

The records helped track Riduan Isamuddin, known as Hambali, the suspected Al Qaeda boss in Southeast Asia, according to The Times.

Either charge the press with treason or shut up. The President and VP need to put the smack down.

He'd lose in court. They can print what they know, but they have no right to know anything. Those holding classified information who leak it to the press are another story, and are in violation of the law. They can be prosecuted. The press cannot. Except, as I say, for not revealing who gave them the information.

Bush is trying to protect the country during time of war - the New York Times hates Bush so much they would rather Americans die. That's about it.

The Times hates President Bush so much they want him to fail at protecting the American people from death. The New York Times has chosen the door with the tiger behind it...

Anyone with even a pea brain should recall that President Bush told the nation from pulpit of the National Cathedral on 9/14/01 that there would be things going on that we would never know about, that it would involve personal and financial aspects of suspects. This really isn't news ... or weren't the Markey's and Maloney's listening? We all knew full well, in the aftermath of 9/11, that the government was going to use every tool available to track possible terrorists. Why is this news ?

The Maloney woman, is particularly offenseive. Her claim to fame is that her husband was killed and son paralyzed because a lone gunman got on a LIRR train and started shooting .... tragic as that was, it would be a picnic compared to what these terrorists would do, given the chance. She's all in favor of gun control, but not terrorist control? She might want to consider STFU.

Grumbled

I caught that one too. The Bush haters in the media think they're so clever and we're stupid. They've become obvious to the point of being pathetic.

No, no, no. The President and VP can do nothing, neither can the DOJ, the DOD, congress or any other government agency. You see, there's this little matter of the constitution. HOWEVER, although the constitution restricts what the GOVERNMENT can or can no do, it makes no mention of what the PEOPLE decide they can or can not do.

In days gone by, the American people showed their ire with creeps like this by cover them with hot tar and feathers and running them out of town on a rail. That is NOT vigilante justice, it is sensible protection of the American people BY the American people. It's OUR job to do something, we're the only ones the constitution does NOT restrict.

Unfortunately, these morons reside in New York, and, although New York has been hit with a terrorist attack, it doesn't seem to have more than a half dozen people who believe 9-11 actually happened. Except, of course, when the money slows, then they suddenly remember about terror and all that. The very fact that these writers from the NYT and WSJ can walk the streets without being buried in rotten fruit and vegetables shows you just what New York City is composed of.

Not only does the MSM want to leak stories to injure our ability to fight the terror-scum, they f**k up the story beyond recognition as well.

I've gotten to the point where I hope it's only their hatred of President Bush. What if they really are actively working against this country - for other reasons? Reasons that might be much darker. It's almost too horrible to think about, but what could make the New York Times be willing to risk all of our lives? Can it be just hatred?

We need to flod the Attorny Generals office with letters and emails to go after the NY Times for leaking legal anti terrorist methods

The NY Times does not hold a security clearance. They cannot be prosecuted for revealing information they are not supposed to have in the first place. Someone else does hold such a clearance, the ones who gave them the information, and can and should be prosecuted.

That said, they are traitorous slime, and no one should ever by their wares again. They will pay, in the market, for their treason.

"It looks like to me that it would be relativity easy to catch the government workers that are feeding the media out top secrets."

I just learned the other day that all EX-Presidents as a courtesy are allowed at the National Security Briefings. That being the case I think we can pretty well guess who the leakers are. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

So you're telling me that a news paper has carte blanche to spread govt secrets any time in any manner because they are NOT supposed to have that info. I think you'r ewrong my friend . So by your logic a spy cannot be prosecuted because he is spreading information he isn't supposed to have .

Isn't it always this way? Journalists become "word challenged" when talking about Republicans and the Bush administration. They are only capable of using words with negative connotations. I am so aware of it now that negative words pop right off the page, and with each word I have more and more contempt for the main stream media.
