$70,000 IS a lot of money for a teacher, but $70,000 divided by $400,000,000 = When this teacher has worked 500 years {!!} they still will not have earned as much as the parting gift to one oil company employee.
All that tells me is that it's better to be a departing oil company employee than a teacher. The nice thing about a free market is that one can aspire to the level that they choose.

They should have bumper stickers that read:
I am an economic illiterate. Thank a government indoctrination camp teacher.
I am a communist. Thank a government indoctrination camp teacher.
In all of America, how many teachers make on or about, or expect to be making in the foreseeable future $70K? In all of America, how many business CEOs retire with $400M?
And in California, $70,000 is what part of the cost of a modest house?
One has NOTHING to do with the other and nor should it. This is apples and oranges. Only SOCIALISTS make these type of comparisons and actually believe they have any merit to them. If you want to make more money get a different job.
I don't care if it would take the average teacher 500 years to earn what some CEO of a private company earns. That doesn't mean that teachers are entitled to demand more taxpayer money every time they want a raise.
Maybe your property taxes aren't high enough but mine sure are. And I'm sick of listening to teachers whine about how little money they make when they only work 185 days a year and make more money than a lot of other people who work year round. In the school district where I live, the average teacher earns $52,000 a year plus benefits. If someone can't live off that, it isn't my problem.
Teachers are paid with public finances (tax money) The exxon executive was paid out of company profits he helped the company earn. I believe I read the value of the company increased by several billion dollars under his leadership.
People have choices of four career types:
1. Jobs that pay a lot of money and are fun to do. Movie stars, professional athletes, rock stars fall into this category, along with a few best-selling novelists. These jobs are very rare and require both talent and luck to get such employment.
2. Jobs which pay a fair amount of money but are hard work. These jobs include carpenters, doctors, small business, nurses, etc.
3. Jobs which don't pay as much but are personally rewarding. These jobs include teachers, clergy, counselors, artists, etc.
4. Jobs which are hard work and pay poorly. Agricultural workers, garbage collectors, chicken cleaners, meat packing, etc.
Most of us make our livings in class two or three. I told my kids the objective was to avoid having to take a job in class 4.
