I think Jay may have been surprised by the amount of Conservatives in the audience and figured he'd better come across as 'pleasant' towards her. The 'attacks' against her language in the book were mellow. Had there been alot of boos in the audience when he announced her in the beginning he may have felt more freely to come across more harsh. He knows how to play to the audience.
