Pence calls his plan a "middle ground" proposal, a "no amnesty immigration reform" in which "securing our border is the first step."
This is fraudulent. At the heart of the Pence plan is amnesty. Illegal aliens here return to Mexico for one week with an assurance they can come back to their jobs. Down there, they visit "Ellis Island Centers" to register as "guest workers" and return with "work permits." The illegal are made legal and put on a path to citizenship.
The only difference between the Pence plan and the Kennedy-Bush amnesty is the one-week vacation employers would happily fund, as it means blanket amnesty for them as well as their illegal hires.

Yep...got to protect that cash cow. I think buchanan's worst fear is someone will actually do something positive towards the problem and he or one of his puppets won't get the credit.
I'll answer - I'm willing to support Pence on this issue because (A) The Senate/President will never support an enforcement-only bill, (B) Pence's plan is nearly identical to Tancredo's own plan (which he now opposes BTW), and (C) Pence's plan secures the borders & deals with the illegals already here simultaneously.
If the Senate/President doesn't support the Pence plan, then yes, I'm all for digging in the heels and refusing to accept or compromise further with the Senate's AMNESTY plan.
Do you?
Oh blow it out your ear
I'm in the same boat. At this point, I'd be satisfied with the Pence bill or nothing at all.
I think the Pence idea that the US Citizen-Wannabe has to pass an English test and Recite the Pledge is the biggest farce I have ever heard. 50 years ago maybe.
Can you see the lawsuits piled to the moon for those that fail? Just that part of the Pence plan is a joke and unenforceable considering how lawyers and judges are mostly left wing whores.
Seal first, then punish employers, then look at Guest Programs and citizenship.
I'm neither. I'm a conservative who recognizes how Washington works. The Senate won't support HR 4437 by itself and the House won't support the Senate's AMNESTY bill. Something has to be worked out, and Pence's plan is the most reasonable compromise there is. Now you can take 90% which passes HR 4437 and secures the border immediately, or keep whining because you didn't get the 100% and the illegal problem continues.
Buchanan makes that point exactly when he points out that Mike Pence is the perfect Trojan Horse for this amnesty bill.
Pence's plan is the same as the Tancredo plan. So not only does Tancredo opposes his own plan, so does Bay Buchanan then, who works with Tom.
I like Pat Buchanan but he's simply wrong on this issue.
I like Mike Pence. In fact, he is my favorite for Presidential contenders in 2008. However, the more I look at his plan, the more I think about it, the more I learn about it, the more I realize that it isn't a workable plan, is unfair to those who have been waiting for years to LEGALLY immigrate, and may end up as a backdoor amnesty. I applaud him for trying to find a compromise between the excellent House bill hated by the liberal-run Senate and the atrocity of a Senate bill hated by the conservate-dominated House. That being said, his plan is not going to go anywhere. He should remain loyal to the conservative in the House and stand firm against the liberal Senate bill. His idea actually undermined the conservative, security-first efforts of the House and that's not good. I wish he had considered the political impact of his plan beyond his own benefit.
"Unlike the Bush amnesty, there is NO path to citizenship under the Pence bill."
See my post #51.
Guest-workers and/or their employers will pay for their own health-care benefits. They won't have any access to Medicaid or other public-healthcare programs.
Will their employers pony up for their health care costs, or will they continue to show up at the hospitals and clinics for taxpayer-funded treatment?
Please see above.
Why should US taxpayers fund benefits migrants who are here to provide cheap labor for US companies?
They're not. U.S. companies would adhere to a ceiling on the number of guest-workers per year as dictated by the Dept of Labor. U.S. companies would have to post any job openings to Americans before being allowed to hire guest-workers. Just like Tancredo's plan.
And so we get another big bureaucracy to monitor the whole process and it's compliance?
Nothing like having someone of Pat Buchanan's ilk to make me get on board with your plan.
Go Pence!!
Wrong. The Pence plan will be absolutely shut out of the upcoming conference discussion as it bears no resemblance whatsoever to either the security first, conservative House bill or the reward-the-illegal-aliens first, liberal Senate bill.
So, which side are you on? Are you with the Kennedy/Pelosi/McCain/Specter bunch who passed the Senate bill or are you with the conservative Republicans in the House who passed the House bill? If you're with the liberals on this, then what the hell are you doing on a conservative website like Free Republic that is actually trying to advance the conservative cause?
Exactly.
Conservatives who oppose the Pence plan are horrible poker players. Call the Senate's bluff on the guest-worker provision. If they and the administration rejects it from the Pence plan, then their true colors will be even more exposed and they'll look like fools.
Private sector does the screening and processing under the Pence plan. There is no new bureaucracy as employers would be abiding by existing Dept of Labor employment regulations.
There is no "backdoor" amnesty, Spiff.
The borders are secured. Guest-workers who complete their 3 two-year intervals (and even in that six-year period after two years there's no guarantees that they can do another two-year stint) would have to go behind all the other emigrants who want to apply for U.S. citizenship.
I applaud him for trying to find a compromise between the excellent House bill hated by the liberal-run Senate and the atrocity of a Senate bill hated by the conservate-dominated House.
I do too. But unfortunately some conservatives want to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. People overwhelmigly want border enforcement. Pence's bill provides that. Senate/Bush administration want some type of guest-worker program. Pence's bill throws a bone to them without sacrificing anything else.
That being said, his plan is not going to go anywhere.
That's fine if the Senate/Bush administration rejects it. People will know where they stand on. The House will NEVER ACCEPT the Senate's plan, forget about it. And I couldn't be happier. But the important thing is to force the Senate to vote on it, get them on record. That's why Pence's plan is critical.
He should remain loyal to the conservative in the House and stand firm against the liberal Senate bill.
He is remaining loyal. Pence hasn't compromised anything. His bill is nearly identical to Tancredo's bill. How can conservatives call Pence's plan an amnesty when it's the same as Tancredo's?
Pence's plan INCLUDES HR 4437.
