This is the nature of the "Drive-By-Media". It is not the facts of the case, its the seriousness of the charges. They got their drive-by hit, and just like Haditha, it unravels and they move on

And the seriousness of the charges depends on how they morph the context. So, the top terrorist in Iraq gets a proper whacking courtesy of the US Air Force and that context is immediately rejected (it was only useful as long as al-Zarqawi was free, as in "US frustrated as top terrorist escapes its grasp for the fifth time") and replaced with a new context: "Badly wounded and helpless man beaten by US forces as he lies on gurney."
