(AP) WASHINGTON Rejecting an argument being made by some conservatives in his own party, President Bush said Thursday that the idea that the United States could force millions of illegal immigrants to return home "ain't gonna work."
Bush told a gathering of Hispanic leaders that the immigration system is broken and Congress needs to pass "commonsense" reform that strengthens the border while allowing more foreigners in to work temporarily and giving those who sneaked in years ago a chance to become citizens.

"Gee, I dunno guys. There's only 3 million of us, give or take. They've got the best army in the world and a navy from hell. Screw this . . . "
John Hancock, just before tearing up
the Declaration of Independence in a
parallel RINO universe.
"ain't gonna work."
That's a rather defeatist approach................
What would a real leader do?
So much for a "can do" attitude. I am so disappointed in Bush. This was one of his worst speeches.
I don't understand why he is taking the position of "We won't do it because it can't be done"
This is the same man who is trying to eliminate world terrorism.
What's easier...stopping a worldwide invasion by 1 billion Muslims or send 12 million illegals back home?
Bush said himself that we "deported" 6 million. To support 12 million you do the same thing as you did to deport 6 million for twice the amount of time.
"...the idea that the United States could force millions of illegal immigrants to return home 'ain't gonna work'."
Maybe we should appeal to the real President -- Vicente Fox -I'm sure he could make it work(sarcasm)
So sorry I voted for the boy!!!!!!!!
Better than a fine have the employers assume FULL financial responsibility for these border jumpers and their families. Can you imagine the cost of housing, social benefits, school, jail and legal cost, auto insurance, healthcare insurance just as starters. Employers would be chartering buses to get those folks to the border.
How do the illegals "self-deport" after we build the wall and seal the border?
You have to COMBINE it with stringent penalties for those who employ/enable illegals and TIGHT border security. This does NOT mean virtual-wall... it means REAL WALL. States that give handouts to illegals(drivers licenses, in-state tuition) MUST be threatened with a cutoff of federal funds and the Anchor-Baby policy must be terminated immediately.
Do that... and we'll talk about Temporary Guest-Workers.
I'm glad this country was not run by folks with your attitude as we decided whether to enter WWII. That was a far more difficult uphill task.
Gawd, ever hear of turnstiles? You can create ways past of the wall to the other side.
As our dear el presidente arbusto once said, "Won't get fooled again!"
Two words, El Presidente: "Why not?"
Are you Bush's speechwriter?
Why can't we deport, i.e. induce them to leave, them? Mexico did.
By the same reasoning, the government should cease all prosecutions of people who cheat on their taxes. After all, there is no way they can catch and prosecute them all.
Sheesh.
I agree, grind these modern day slave drivers into dust with fines, put Uncle Sam's huge tits away and we won't have to spend very much to assist them on the long treck back to the lands they support.
You didn't think that was funny? All these millions of illegals, trying to get home, but we built this big wall and now they can't get over the border.
They can't all get TO the checkpoints, and if they could, would Mexico allow them in without papers?
It's like having to bulldoze the levies because they were holding the water IN.
