All of these men were part of a rollcall of honor with names that spoke of a pride as bright as the colors they bore: the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Poland's 24th Lancers, the Royal Scots Fusiliers, the Screaming Eagles, the Yeomen of England's armored divisions, the forces of Free France, the Coast Guard's "Matchbox Fleet'' and you, the American Rangers...No disrespect to the Rangers, but if it hadn't been for the U.S. Navy and the destroyer USS Satterlee, there would have been no conquest at Pointe Du Hoc.

My uncle was a medic with that Rangers. He had to miss D-Day because he was ordered to attend a sick Ranger; the family says he was the only person from his platoon who survived.

And sadly, knowing an invasion was coming at some point, the Nazis had moved the big artillery inland some miles. The Rangers were raked by machine gun and small arms fire.
