England afraid to fly its own flag

Following threats by extremist Islamic group, several corporations, chain of pubs ban England flag

Following warnings by extremist Islamic group al-Muhajiroun, in which the group said that the red cross in the England flag symbolizes the 'blood thirsty crusaders' and the occupation of Muslims, some of the largest companies in England have ordered their workers not to wave the flags.

The flag has recently appeared in England on everything from bikinis to cars, and sold in endless versions in stores.

But the Islamic protest forced some corporations, such as cable companies NTL, Heathrow airport in London, and even the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency to ban the flag in every form due to fears from reactions of Muslims.

The Sun tabloid newspaper has in recent days launched a campaign to bring back the flag, and has published a blacklist of companies preventing their workers from expressing their patriotism at work.

The Sun said that a large pub network has banned drinkers from entering with symbols of the national team.

The hero of the day is a two year-old toddler, who was thrown out with his parents from Leicester, because he wore the England team's uniform.

"Patron saint of Scotland is Saint Andrew: White saltaire on blue background. Patron saint of England is Saint George; red cross on white background Patron Saint of Ireland is Saint Patrick; red saltaire on white background. Wales isn't included in the union jack."

You are right. Thanks for the final authoritative correction.

I am aware of William Blake's authorship, but the fact remains that the song implies that England and the English have displaced the literal Jerusalem (G-d forbid!), a forerunner of "Anglo-Israelism" which is a forerunner of the "identity movement." Furthermore, I'm not a chr*stian and couldn't sing a chr*stian hymn in good conscience, but if the English want a hymn as their national anthem that's their business. I just wish it weren't one with Anglo-Israel implications.

I've never watched much Monty Python, being a prude and all.

I predict that someday the majority of Americans will be afraid to leave their homes. A combination of fear of gangs and fear of Federal, State and Local governments will make Americans prefer to stay inside.

I think you are misinterpreting the lyrics. I always understood it as a metaphor, that being Jerusalem used as
metaphor for the holy kingdom of God that would be planted on England's shores through the efforts of Christian evangelism (and/or social reform, given the 'dark satanic mills' and 'chariots of fire' reference) ... Why else would they ask if Jesus (lamb of God) walked in England? It's absurd question except as a metaphor.

I am unaware of what you mean by identity movement, so forgive me if others have picked up a different meaning, i'm just saying that wouldnt be the meaning the author intended.

Also, it's hardly a nationalist song (like "Rule Brittania!" is), but I guess it got some patriotic cachet from the "England's green and pleasant land" reference.

My apologies if I have misinterpreted Blake's words. He was a strange character anyway, so no telling what he really meant.

I am a Noachide, which means I reject chr*stianity and accept the Jewish concept of G-d, so I cannot identify the Kingdom of G-d with chr*stianity. Maybe that's coloring my perception.

But mostly I'm a literalist, which means that "Jerusalem" means "Jerusalem," just as "Israel" means "the Jewish people."

You might consider reading the whole thread. The OP is wildly inaccurate.
