College is a waste of money and time. So very thankful am I to have skipped it. High school was a 4 year jail sentence. Freedom begins where school ends.

I would agree that college is not for everyone, but how can you make such a statement?
If it werent for college educations, particularly in the sciences (I'm about to graduate as a mechanical engineer myself), we couldnt push the envelope of our technologically-driven industry.
I used to feel that way. As I've gotten older, though, I've come to regret not going. If your life's the way you want it, that's great. But from my perspective, I think I would be better off if I had gone. Once the kids are a bit older, I might.
It's all about what papers you possess in the Credentialed Society.
I am finally finishing up a four year degree as a very "adult" student. I am glad I am doing it. I may balk at some of the courses I have taken and the political correctness that has overtaken the subject matter in some areas but I think some of these classes are absolutely invaluable and wish they were part of high school curricula (especially law and finance).
I only wish I had time to take more classes since there is so much to learn. It is one thing to say you are glad you didn't attend college (or a technical school for those whose career plans fit that option) if you have never gone but I haven't heard too many folks say that they regretted going to college when they have a degree in hand!
Colleges know that a huge chunk of the freshmen have no business being in school. But their parents serve as cash cows, so they take them in and milk them before they go away. Those who have not graduated from high schools probably are no worse the the lower half of the graduates who enroll in college.
Well, it depends on what you want to do.
If you want to grow your own business, or be a welder, or join the military, then yeah, college is a waste of money.
If you want to be a physicist, biologist, or a nuclear engineer, well, that's a whole different kettle of fish. :)
It's valuable for many people, but I agree that with enough motivation, you can probably learn far more through independent study and reading than most people learn in college.
What did you do instead of college, and what do you do now? Do you think college would have been worth it if you weren't paying anything, or would even the time have been a waste?
