The bitter battle over the immigration bill has become a legislative minefield in this election year, though it's still unclear whether November will see any heavy political fallout as a result. To put it mildly, this issue is a thorny wilderness, festering intra-party divisions and brewing voter backlashes. It could inflict additional wounds on George W. Bush's battle-scarred presidency, shrink the GOP's congressional Republican majority and, possibly, hurt some vulnerable Democrats. Let's slice up some of these pitfalls. Stand Up For America ! |

Important and Forgotten Words:
Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN
"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
~Theodore Roosevelt 1907
That is a great cartoon! Very apt!

Illegal immigration opponents rally in Vegas, plot strategy
ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Hundreds of illegal immigration opponents rallied in Las Vegas and pledged to fight a Senate plan that legalizes undocumented Mexicans in the U.S.
The two-day Unite to Fight Summit II, which ended Sunday, drew about 350 activists from across the nation.
"This is aimed at getting everyone on the same page," said organizer Mark Edwards, a local radio show host and founder of the Wake Up America Foundation. "You have to try new tactics and see what works."

As always, your posts are heartening. It had often seemed we were but voices crying in the wilderness -- but now "We The People" are finely being heard!
The classic slippery slope argument in defense of all or nothing extremism. Let's raise the penalty for not wearing a seat belt to life imprisonment.

I am deeply concerned that the President is still advocating a guest worker program that puts millions of illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship and does not require workers to return to their home countries before applying for a temporary visa. The House is unwavering in its position that we cannot even discuss a guest worker program until we have secured our borders.
