The bitter battle over the immigration bill has become a legislative minefield in this election year, though it's still unclear whether November will see any heavy political fallout as a result. To put it mildly, this issue is a thorny wilderness, festering intra-party divisions and brewing voter backlashes. It could inflict additional wounds on George W. Bush's battle-scarred presidency, shrink the GOP's congressional Republican majority and, possibly, hurt some vulnerable Democrats. Let's slice up some of these pitfalls. Stand Up For America ! |

Excerpt:
"By the late '80s and early '90s, longtime residents complained about a parking crunch caused by dozens of people crammed into the neighborhood's first boarding house - the big house they called "the Fortress." The city eventually required parking permits, and the problems subsided.
In the late '90s, Fulton caught people peering into her rooms, urinating in her yard and making catcalls at her.
It was common knowledge that there were multiple families and dozens of men, mainly day laborers, living in the homes, she says."
...
"These are houses but this street is becoming an apartment complex. They are not touching each other but they might as well be," Fulton says.
Senate Passes Massive Guest Worker Amnesty-Tell Your Elected Officials This Is NOT What America Wants!
Some of you have called and emailed your disappointment. Remember, though, all is not lost. The House does not see amnesty in the same favorable light as the Kennedy/Specter/McCain controlled Senate so there is still time to make a difference.
The U.S. Congress is on a Memorial Day district work period this week (May 30-June 2)-which means most members {{{are back in their respective states.}}}
Now is the ideal time to have your voice heard and make it count.
Will the House of Representatives Represent the American People?
Not only do we believe it is extremely important for you to call and visit your Senators' offices to let them know you are aware of their vote, but we must also keep the pressure on the U.S. House. The House is big battleground and the White House is already digging entrenchments.
As Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) recently admitted, "Ultimately we all understand where this bill's going to be written. It's going to be written in the conference committee between the House and the Senate. . . " The truth is the massive guest worker amnesty could get better in conference, but because the conference between the two chambers will take place behind closed doors, it is more likely that the massive guest worker amnesty will get worse. Is it possible? Sadly, yes.
FAIR is asking you to call and visit your Representative's district offices to demand that the House does not appoint any conferees for the conference committee with the Senate.
Simply tell your Congressman:
"I am a voter in the Congressman's district and I am calling today to ask Congressman XX to demand that House Leadership REFUSE to appoint conferees to negotiate with the U.S. Senate on their massive guest worker amnesty. The American public is overwhelmingly opposed to that legislation. As elected officials who represent the people, please tell your leadership that no more time should be wasted on the guest worker amnesty bill S. 2611."

This statement will send a loud and clear message to Congress that the House should do the work of the American people. The American people want border security, but not at the price of giving amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. We can get our borders secure without a guest worker amnesty. Do not let anyone tell you differently. And, in case a staff person asks you, a "pathway to citizenship" for those who are here illegally is amnesty-regardless of what people call it, it's an amnesty.
Let's not give the Representatives a chance to be coerced or misled by the White House on this massive amnesty. Call your Representative and let them know you are watching. FAIR promises continued and renewed vigilance in letting you know more about this issue so vital to America's future. With informed FAIR members, we are betting the U.S. Congress will not ignore the public interest a second time.
Look up your local district office here.

Your Calls and Personal Visits are Making a Difference!
President Bush insulted the American people by advocating policies that undermine of the American Dream. Why are we putting the "dreams" of illegal aliens before the dreams of the American people? President Bush calls amnesty a "rational middle ground." Does that imply that enforcing our laws and protecting our borders is not rational?
Whatever the reason that the President and some Senators want a massive guest worker amnesty, your hard work making phone calls and visits is turning the tide on this vital issue.
As reported in the Washington Post this weekend, Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT), a moderate Republican who supported the Senate's amnesty proposal, is changing his tune. Strong protests from his constituents have prompted him to come out against amnesty. "It would be a huge mistake to give people a path to citizenship that came here illegally." The people of Connecticut went to work and made that happen. That is a fantastic job! You shook one of the strongest open-borders advocates and turned him around. What can you do in your district?
Read more on how your power and influence are being felt by Members of Congress. FAIR hopes this causes everyone to work even harder and know they are making a difference-a difference to help save America! Thank you to all our members-we can't fight the fight without you.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is characterizing critics of last week's pro-open borders rallies (held in several U.S. cities) as "anti-immigration extremists" who have made "open calls for terrorist violence, including truck bombs, machine gun attacks, and assassinations of U.S. senators and members of Congress." To make the point, the SPLC website quotes extremist New Jersey radio host Hal Turner, who said, "I advocate using extreme violence against illegal aliens. Clean your guns. Have plenty of ammunition. Find out where the largest gathering of illegal aliens will be near you. Go to the area well in advance, scope out several places to position yourself and then do what has to be done."

Report on Senate Amnesty vote
Last week, just prior to the Senate's vote on amnesty,
Ron De Jong and I visited the offices of every "Amnesty
Republican" we had identified and delivered petitions
from team members.
It was amazing to listen to staffers as they tried to justify
a vote for amnesty. "The Senator doesn't consider this an
amnesty bill... The Senator believes that the $2,000 fine
makes this not amnesty... The Senator doesn't support
amnesty but he supports this bill."
The double-talk was astounding. And it seems they think
Americans are buying what they're selling. Worse of all,
the President and about 20 Senate "Amnesty Republicans"
are dividing our nation over this very controversial
amnesty plan. Go here for my GrassfireBlog entry on
this issue:

+ + Grassfire team members making their mark
Despite the Senate's betraying vote on amnesty there is
no denying that Grassfire team members are making a mark
on this and other issues. Every office we went to had
received many, many phone calls, letters, faxes and emails
from Grassfire team members. One senior staffer told me
that Grassfire team members are "well informed" and
very active. And because of your work, I have been
privileged to represent your voice on dozens of local
and national radio and television interviews.
+ + Fight against amnesty not over
The Senate's amnesty vote is not the end of the story.
Rep. Sensenbrenner -- the House's lead negotiator for
the House-Senate Conference that is the next step in
this battle -- is calling the Senate bill "amnesty"
and is poised to fight the measure.
We are now working on a strategy to show grassroots
support for Rep. Sensenbrenner and others in the House.
Our contacts tell us that the House is the key -- if
the House stands strong, the Senate bill will die.

Next phase of grassroots action
This week, billboards go up taking our "Stop The Invasion"
campaign from coast to coast. I will be traveling to
California for our official debut of our L.A. board
next week, which is located at a very high traffic
spot that will be seen by 5 million people. And my
staff has just informed me that we reached our goal
of 500,000 petitions in just the past 24 hours.
Today and tomorrow, our strategy team is finalizing what
we're calling "Phase 3" of this battle. Grassroots action
will be the key determining factor in deciding whether we
grant amnesty to tens of millions of illegals. I'll be
sharing more in the coming days.
+ + The battle continues...
Well, the battle continues. And with each engagement, I
become more convinced that grassroots citizens like you
play a much larger role in these debates than you realize.
I wish just once you could be standing in a Senator's
office when the phones were ringing with Grassfire team
members, or hear a staffer offer high praise to our team
for their persistence and knowledge on the issues.
What an honor to represent you on these and other issues
of vital concern to our nation. With warm regards,
Steve Elliott, President

Mexico campaigns on immigration issue
By UPI Staff
United Press International
May 30, 2006
WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Mexican President Vicente Fox's government reportedly is making a concerted effort for a favorable outcome of the U.S. debate on illegal aliens.
Noting Fox's recent tour of U.S. Western states while the U.S. Congress debates further tightening of the border with Mexico, The Washington Times said Fox's administration is conducting a well-financed campaign to shape public opinion in favor of more Mexicans coming into the United States.
The Times said the campaign is working through a coalition of U.S.-based immigration rights groups, Mexican-American organizations and grass-roots Hispanic groups to lobby U.S. lawmakers and civic leaders for amnesty for the estimated 12 million illegals in the United States.
One U.S. prosecutor complained to the newspaper he is outraged by what he called Mexico's efforts to overturn U.S. laws being used to arrest and prosecute illegal aliens. He accused Mexico of being behind a lawsuit challenging Arizona's alien-smuggling law, the report said. But a lawyer involved in suit denied he is working for the Mexican government.
