TALLAHASSEE · Before signing his last state budget into law on Thursday, Gov. Jeb Bush firmed up his conservative credentials by vetoing more spending than ever in his eight-year tenure.
Bush axed $448.7 million from the $73.9 billion budget that takes effect in July and which also sets aside record savings for emergencies.
Ousted are dozens of South Florida projects -- including tens of millions of dollars that were headed for Broward and Palm Beach counties.
"It's never easy," Bush said of the vetoes. "You always hurt people's feelings. I don't enjoy that. And I'm always surprised that people are surprised. I've been consistent. There should be no surprises. And the people who really follow the budget knew that."
Many of the projects Bush cut were of only local interest, and Bush said, didn't have a statewide purpose or would be better paid for by local governments.

Thank you! I am in PB county and I am mad that this whole immigration debate has turned into a big boo hoo about Mexicans in California. Almost none of the discussion applies to the people I am exposed to. They are primarily refugees from communist regimes, not Keebler elves doing the work that Americans won't... We bake cookies at night :) I see serious and heartbreaking human rights abuses ignored by sanctuary city policies.
Sorry, but I think Jeb's stance on immigration has less to do with state politics than with personal conviction. He isn't running for anything else (so far as we know) so he's taken the wrong stance toward what's doing the right thing. As far as the drilling is concerned, my husband works at a HUGE resort in Florida. We are intimately tied to the tourism industry, but I don't care what you say oil platforms 3 miles off shore aren't going to destroy florida tourism and politicians who say so are being dishonest. They are beholden to the enviro whackos.
