Following is National Review's list of its top 50 conservative rock songs, with the magazine's explanations of its choices.
1. "Won't Get Fooled Again," by The Who.
The conservative movement is full of disillusioned revolutionaries; this could be their theme song, an oath that swears off naive idealism once and for all. "There's nothing in the streets / Looks any different to me / And the slogans are replaced, bythebye. . . . Meet the new boss / Same as the old boss." The instantly recognizable synthesizer intro, Pete Townshend's ringing guitar, Keith Moon's pounding drums, and Roger Daltrey's wailing vocals make this one of the most explosive rock anthems ever recorded the best number by a big band, and a classic for conservatives.
2. "Taxman," by The Beatles.
A George Harrison masterpiece with a famous guitar riff (which was actually played by Paul McCartney): "If you drive a car, I'll tax the street / If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat / If you get too cold, I'll tax the heat / If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet." The song closes with a humorous jab at death taxes: "Now my advice for those who die / Declare the pennies on your eyes."

I looked it up and it was one instance of access to a kiddie porn site. The police seized all of his computers and found no other kiddie porn on them. Given those circumstances I will give him the benefit of the doubt that it was like he said and research for an upcoming project.
I am familiar with the version by "The Trashmen" and AllMusic.com has interesting summaries on the two versions.
What, no talk of divorce????
Not only is there no divorce, he's still faithful!
Compare this with Axl Rose's "I used to love her, but I had to kill her"
Semi-related...I saw what's left of The Who a few years back at the Hollywood Bowl. Right at the climax of the song, right during the buildup of the drumming and before Daltrey screams...
a drunken teen hopped on the cement block in front of our seats....directly in front of me, and started playing air guitar. I was so ticked off.
Well, that is the correct choice morally.
Just kidding, folks. No one tell my wife, okay?
Yes. Many of the 60s lefty revolutionaries (including me) are now firmly ensconsed on the right. Horowitz, Dennis Miller, etc.
Also, "wont get fooled again" is a perfect analogy for how many conservative Republicans feel about the 1986 Amnesty for illegal immigrants bill passed by Congress.
Amazingly, McLame, GWB, Lindsey Graham and other woosies are trying to do exactly that -- FOOL US again. But this time the outcome would be the decimation of the American culture and language as we know it today.
You have to consider that 80-90 percent of Latin Americans are firm leftists in their political beliefs.
Oh sure, we can hope they see the folly of their ways after they flood America, but are you willing to bet the life of your kids and grandkids on that wispy possibility.
Not me. I wont get fooled again.
For those like me that arn't too hip(or is that hep?),who wrote and performed "Government Cheese"?
Just too bad he didn't finish the job with Abbie Hoffman at Woodstock.
Excellent choice. Top ten conservative song.
"It's not an animal / It's an abortion."
I wondered if my ears were deceiving me, back in the day. Even the Sex Pistols can be right sometimes.
I'm a Kinks fan, so I'm happy that "20th Century Man" earned a top ten position. And I'm amazed that "Two Sisters" was spotted. It's an achingly beautiful song that very few people know.
But they missed another great Kinks anti-gov't song:
People in GrayAnd "Won't Get Fooled Again" is just the best rock song, period.I got a letter this morning with serious news that's gone
and ruined my day,
The borough surveyor's used compulsory purchase
[eminent domain] to acquire my domain,
They're gonna pull up the floors,
they're gonna knock down the walls,
They're gonna dig up the drains.
Here come the people in grey they're gonna take me away to Lord knows where,
But I'm so unprepared I got no time to pack
and I got nothing to wear,
Here come the people in grey, To take me away.
Me and my baby's gonna get on a train
that's gonna take us away,
I'm gonna live in a tent,
we're gonna pay no more rent
we're gonna pay no more rates,
We're gonna live in a field, we're gonna buy me gun,
to keep the policemen away.
I'm gonna pass me a brand new resolution,
I'm gonna fight me a one man revolution, someway,
Gonna beat those people in grey,
But here come the people in grey,
To take me away.
The people in grey have gone and taken away my right to voice my complaint,
Her Majesty's Government have sent me a form I must complete it today.
But it's making me blue,
don't wanna tell all my secrets to The people in grey.
I'm gonna pass me a brand new resolution,
I'm gonna fight me a one man revolution, someway,
Gonna start my rebellion today.
But here come the people in grey,
To take me away.
Oh, Lord, those people in grey,
I gotta get back at those people in grey,
Here come the people in grey,
To take me away.
Great pick. My wife's favorite song.
That should have made the top 50. One of my personal favorites.
Thanks, I forgot about that.
Damn I miss Warren, I waas very screwed in the head for almost a week when he died.
No Caucasian Guilt by Noh Mercy
( I never owned a slave,
I never made a Chinaman build me a railroad,
I never put a Jap in a camp)
and
Saviour Machine by David Bowie
(President Joe once had a dream
The world held his hand
So he told them his scheme
For a saviour machine
They called it the Prayer
It's answer was law
It's logic struck warmth, gave them food
How they adored it til it cried in its boredom)
"Get a Job" - The Silhouettes
Johnny was bad, even as a child everybody could tell
Everyone said if you don't get straight You'll surely go to hell
But Johnny didn't care
He was an outlaw by the time that he was Ten years old
He didn't wanna do what he was told
Just a prankster, juvenile gangster
His teachers didn't understand They kicked him out of school
At a tender early age
Just because he didn't want to learn things
(Had other interests)
He liked to burn things
The lady down the block
She had a radio that Johnny wanted oh so bad
So he took it the first chance he had
Then he shot her in the leg
And this is what she said
Only a lad
You really can't blame him
Only a lad
Society made him
Only a lad
He's our responsibility
Only a lad
He really couldn't help it
Only a lad
He didn't want to do it
Only a lad
He's underprivileged and abused
Perhaps a little bit confused
His parents gave up they couldn't influence his attitude
Nobody could help The little man had no gratitude
And when he stole the car,
Nobody dreamed that he would Try to take it so far
He didn't mean to hit the poor man
Who had to go and die
It made the judge cry
(chorus)
It's not his fault that he can't believe
It's not his fault that he can't behave
Society made him go astray
Perhaps if we're nice he'll go away
(Repeat chorus) Hey there Johnny you really don't fool me
You get away with murder And you think it's funny
You don't give a damn if we live or if we die
Hey there Johnny boy
I hope you fry!
What, no Dixie Chicks?!
Journey kicks ass. Too bad the cookie cutter music of today can't produce the same quality of legends.
