The People Column (goofy celebrity baby name alert)

A name with spice

Just what is it about celebrities that compels them to saddle their babies with, shall we say, unusual names?

The latest victim: Geri Halliwell's infant daughter, whom she named Bluebell Madonna.

The 33-year-old singer, also known as Ginger Spice of the Spice Girls, told Hello! magazine she'd been inspired by seeing the spring flowers during her pregnancy.

The baby was born May 14 at London's Portland Hospital, weighing 5 pounds, 12 ounces.

''What really clinched it for me was my mother telling me that the bluebell is increasingly rare -- so it's [a] precious flower, which seems just right for my daughter,'' Halliwell was quoted as saying.

Halliwell made no mention of the baby's father in the interview.

In other odd-names news, after naming their first-born girl Moxie CrimeFighter last June, comedian Penn Jillette and wife Emily came up with something a bit more mainstream for their new son -- Zolten Penn, who was born Monday.

''Zolten is a common Hungarian name, it's my wife's maiden name and most importantly, it's the name of Dracula's dog,'' Jillette, the 51-year-old larger half of the comedy-and-magic duo Penn & Teller, said in a statement.

Zolten Penn Jillette weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces.

Some names should create probable cause to test for drugs. Bluebell Madonna? Poor child...

Dracula's dog was never serious about anything.

Fritiof Q. Fryxell got an "award" for the weirdest name, decades ago. I know him. He was a famous geologist and a fine teacher.

My archeology teacher was Lawrence Toombs, pronounced tombs.

I do not want a doctor named Carver or Killmore.

"I do not want a doctor named Carver or Killmore."

There were two gynecologists on the staff at the hospital at Calcasieu AFB while my mother was pregnant with me:

Dr Gore and Dr Rape.

I once worked with a Dr Au (pronounced aw), and a Dr Pepper.

Naming your child after Dracula's dog? OK, I think most of these names are goofy and pretty juvinile, but that one is downright cruel. I hope the kid bites him.

My mother used to go to an OB-GYN named Dr. Bonebrake. Don't know why he didn't become an orthopedist.

Last name in the Manhattan phonebook for many years:
Archimedes I. Zzzyandottie III.
I always wondered 1. what the "I" stood for, 2. what happened to the other two.

I kid you not.
