Feinstein offers plan to legalize immigrants - The "Orange" card program

Washington -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein called the complicated Senate plan to legalize the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country "100 percent calculated to fail" and proposed Monday a simpler system based on a bar-coded orange card for anyone illegally in the country before January. "If we don't get this right, we're going to end up repeating the mistakes of the past," Feinstein said of the proposed immigration overhaul.

Feinstein said the Senate's plan to split immigrants into three groups -- and treat each group differently -- is unworkable and predicted it would create a bureaucratic nightmare and would lead to substantial fraud.

The Senate is scheduled to vote by the end of this week on a complex and controversial overhaul of U.S. immigration law that would offer a road to legalization for many of the 12 million immigrants already here illegally, create a guest worker program for future blue-collar immigrants, legalize 1.5 million farm workers, toughen border security and crack down on domestic enforcement.

Feinstein's proposal highlights the doubts about the Senate bill's effectiveness that even the measure's supporters have harbored. A key part of the Senate bill -- designed on the fly six weeks ago in backroom negotiations -- is a compromise designed to draw 60 votes, the magic combination of some Republicans and most Democrats needed to withstand a filibuster.

Under the bill, illegal immigrants living in the United States five years or more would be eligible for a path to earned citizenship. Those here two to five years, an estimated 2.8 million people, would have to leave the country before applying for a new guest worker visa. Those here less than two years, an estimated 2 million people, would be subject to immediate deportation.

"If we don't get this right, we're going to end up repeating the mistakes of the past,"

If you DO get this right, it will be a first.

How about an RFID chip in their forehead or maybe the palm of their hand?

Why is it any worse than the original bill. I doubt there was ever any serious expectations that they would/could distinguish how long each immigrant had been here. That was just window dressing for the voters.

What could be simpler (and fairer to everyone) than deport all illegals starting immediately (however long it takes) and use the existing normal (legal) immigration process?

Too simple?

Immigrant #1 interview: How long have you been here Pablo? 5 and a half years.
Immigrant #2 How long have you been here Jose? 5 and a half years.
Immigrant #3 interview: How long have you been here Miguel? 5 and a half years.

Immigrant #10,999,999 interview: How long have you been here Antonio? 5 and a half years.
Immigrant #11,000,000 interview: How long have you been here Juan? 5 and a half years.
Reutuers report: In an amazing turn of events, every one of the 11 million illegal immigrants came to the US more than 5 years ago.

If Feinstein's amendment passes, illegals will need to pay $2,000 up front rather than 6 years from now. Plus they will need to pay the $750 which goes to health care and education costs under another amendment approved last week.

So that's $2750 total to get legalized, plus any additional application fees. I still oppose amnesty, but the bigger the punishment in monetary terms, the more I like the bill.

Exactly. Why would anyone think these people would be honest and fess up to how long they haven't been here?

They will lie, and someone else will swear to it.

What a farce!

Government in the US is supposed to derive its power from the consent of the governed. It is supposed to be "by the people and for the people". With regard to immigration, preservation of culture that led to our country's greatness, and national security issues related to our borders, our President and Congress are in the process of selling us out and ignoring the interests of the existing, law-abiding citizens. I loathe the Democratic Party, but am quickly becoming furious with the Republicans. I don't agree with Libertarian philosophy taken to the Nth degree. Where do I go now, the Constitution Party??

Maybe we should work out a plan to give out the "Orange Cards" and pre marked as democrat, voter registration cards at news stands and street corners in mexico. That way our new friends would be able to vote in November, take over the country and we could go back to sleep.
