Jeff Crank won the first battle of what may still be a sixway war for the open 5th Congressional District seat Friday, winning top-line designation on the Aug. 8 Republican primary ballot.
Crank, a former Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce vice president, gathered 46 percent of votes from delegates at the district assembly in Colorado Springs.
Sen. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, won 40 percent, former El Paso County Sheriff John Anderson 13 percent and businessman Patrick Carter 1 percent. A fifth announced candidate, A.J. Towne, did not show up Friday.
By getting more than 30 percent of the delegates,
Crank and Lamborn will occupy the top two spots on the ballot. Failing to get 10 percent, Carters bid for office is over.
Anderson, by getting between 10 percent and 30 percent, now must collect 1,000 petition signatures by Thursday to make the ballot. He began that task weeks ago and is more than three-quarters of the way toward that goal, he said.
The results set up what could be a six-way primary battle. Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera, retired Air Force officer Bentley Rayburn and former El Paso County Commissioner Duncan Bremer bypassed the assembly and are collecting petition signatures.
Whoever wins that tussle will face retired Air Force officer Jay Fawcett in the general election. Fawcett won the Democratic assembly in Greeley with 77 percent of the vote Friday; businessman Brian Scott got 4 percent and rancher Curtis Imrie received 19 percent. Imrie said he would not attempt to petition onto the ballot.
Crank attributed his showing to a strong grass-roots effort throughout the six-county district. He won a tight race in Fremont County and was the overwhelming choice in Chaffee, Lake, Park and Teller counties.

So, we have a Flake in Arizona and a Crank in Colorado.
Excellent.
Crank is Hugh Hewitt's candidate in this race. Endorsed by Hugh. Great candidate.
I like the fact that Hefley endorsed Crank. Just having a hard time deciding between him and a very conservative state senator.
What do you know about Crank and social issues?
Not only is Jeff an excellent Elk hunter, but his cousin is Wyoming's attorney general and is doing great things to preserve gun rights.
Jeff is the real deal, and he knows what *DC* is about.
Silk Glove/Iron Fist.....Jeff Crank
Vote for Him.
Do you remember that Jeff Crank Supported "homosexual activist" Richard Skorman for City Council, oh and what about supporting C + D..?
Some conservative huh..?
Yeah I think maybe you all are 'plants' from the Jeffcrank campaign. Good tactic, but it won't work, and it (his conservative record) is not true..
The facts speak for themselves..!!
He may be Personally, adgirl. I don't know him personally, but I disagree with both of these moves which make him seem liberal. I don't hate Jeff Crank, I disagree with his personal decisions, and associations such as Rich Skorman. It does not seem that he was a conservative when: as VP of Governmental Affairs at the Chamber he doesn't object to them endorsing Skorman, and even praises Him "he's a known quantity".. Once again I don't hate jeff crank, but I do not believe he is the "most conservative" or best choice in this 5th Congressional race..!
