Michael Kinsley's column today gets into the great irony of the (potential) Giuliani vs. McCain battle in the GOP primaries in 2008: McCain agrees with the Religious Right on most things, but they hate him. Giuliani disagrees with the Religious Right on most things, but they (at least for now) love him.
This is borne out by polling. To take just one example, a November 2004 Gallup poll found that, in a field of Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Jeb Bush, Giuliani came out on top with 47 percent of the vote from all Republicans. He got 47 percent from the subset of conservative Republicans. Meanwhile, McCain got only 23 percent of the subset of conservative Republicans (26 percent from all Republicans).
Now, those numbers, as mentioned, are from 2004. But things don't seem to have changed very much in the interim. A Gallup analysis (subscription only) from February 16, 2006, has this to say about support for Giuliani vs. McCain:
Who is supporting Giuliani vs. McCain?

I'll tell you right now, in a choice between Rudy and McCain? No choice at all, I'd vote Rudy.
people/insignificant...there.
As far as I'm concerned- anything pre-September 11 is null and void. I'll pay attention to what Rudy says NOW about this issue.
Rudi is tough on crime and demands government accountability. IMHO, Ruid is GW with a backbone and none of the "new tone" comedy. McInsane would be owned by the MSM. The traitor McShame isn't going anywhere.
I have no idea what goes on inside someone else's head, but I can tell you that Mr. Giuliani hasn't given any indication that he's had a "Catholic principle" in his mind in decades.
On that score, McCain is out. Who does that leave us with? Excuse me, but I don't think George Allen can win.
I have no idea who that leaves "us" with (I'm not a Republican, so I don't know what "us" means in this context). I can assure you, however, that Rudy Giuliani will never be elected President of the United States.
As I've said here before on FreeRepublic, I never thought I'd see the day when so-called "conservatives" would support a liberal presidential candidate who ought to be serving time in a Federal prison right now.
Is there a single local municipality in this Nation where illegals are turned in the Federal Government when they seek medical or police aid.
I want my politicians to act reasonably. I explained why a mayor in a city such as NY could act no different then how Giuliani acted.
The Governmental obligation failed at the Federal level in allowing them in. I would bet under Giuliani they wouldn't get in so easy.
I think in the end it will be a good opportunity for Allen to quietly build support. I have nothing against Rudy winning the primary, but history is littered with the remains of front-runner who were the "Sure thing." Let's see how the mid-terms play out first.
Is there a single local municipality in this nation where the chief executive went to such great lengths to openly -- and proudly -- announce his intention to ignore a Federal law on this matter? And to then have the BALLS to suggest that he's somehow presidential material?!?!?
Actually, I shouldn't be too harsh on Rudy. He's never actually said he wants to run for president. In fact, I've long said that he has no intention of even entering the 2008 White House race. He knows better than anyone that he'd be subject to a humiliating Mondale-like defeat of historic proportions.
And that's exactly your problem. You have no evidence to support this, and yet you insist that it must somehow be the case.
Aside from all his political/philosophical baggage that will make it hard for him to garner support among conservatives, Giuliani's own track record gives every indication that he is woefully deficient even for issues on which people think he would do very well!
And yes.... no matter what get out and vote in November
Oh, you think that's a negative.
Municipal officers do the same thing but only Giuliani stands up and says this is crap. It is not the responsibility of local officials to manage immigration.
I say it shows leadership.
Sure, if he runs, he may be defeated for the nomination by those with logic such as you display.
And you'll get a Democrat President and like it. How does President Gore sound?
You doubt Giuliani would be tough on the border? LOL
President Gore? LOL. I don't think so.
If Rudy Giuliani were to win the GOP nomination in 2008, I could easily see a bizarre scenario unfolding where a Democrat (Mark Warner) wins a landslide of historic proportions -- simply by mounting a very credible campaign as the more conservative candidate in the race.
If you really believe this country would ever elect a president who is a short, bald, Italian-American from New York City who wears glasses and has a minor speech impediment, you have no understanding of U.S. politics.
I don't like either one of them.
I may finally vote third party.
Yes, I do. And you have no evidence to support your contention that he would be any different than the morons inside the Beltway that are trying to address the issue right now.
I disagree about the kook factor...I don't think McCain is a kook, I believe he is totally, certifiably Insane!
