Reid calls language proposal racist (Dingy Harry steps in it)
Washington Times ^ | 5/19/06 | Charles Hurt

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called a proposal to make English the official language "racist" on the Senate floor yesterday. "This amendment is racist. I think it's directed basically to people who speak Spanish," the Democrat said during the already tense debate over immigration reform. Moments later, the Senate approved the measure on a 63-34 vote. Virtually all Republicans were joined by 11 Democrats to approve the largely symbolic amendment. Immediately following that vote, the Senate approved a second amendment, declaring on a 58-39 vote that English is the "common and unifying language." Such proposals enjoy overwhelming support among American voters. A poll by Zogby International earlier this year found that 84 percent of Americans say English should be the official language of government operations. The same poll found that 77 percent of Hispanics agree. And it's a bipartisan issue, according to the poll, which found that 92 percent of Republicans and 82 percent of Democrats approve making English the country's official language. Mr. Reid's charge of racism caused a stir of whispers in the Senate chamber and gallery, and Sen. James M. Inhofe, the Oklahoma Republican who offered the amendment, was clearly offended.

When did Spanish become a "race?"

When did it become illegal to discriminate against someone because of their language?

Now, lets get to the issues and solutions.

lol, this reminds me of when all those people got 'offended' for the indian tribes who had their names as sports teams. But it turned out that polls showed that a vast majority of tribal members were not offended and even liked having the exposure for their tribal name and probably the royalties etc.. from it.

Especially, if they are written officially in English:-)

We should stay home. That would send the GOP a message on immigration. The Dems call an English First amendment to an immigration bill racist and we punish the GOP who supports this overwhelmingly by giving the Dems more seats in the Senate. That would make the GOP crack down really hard on immigration.

There you have it! Let these people have an actual stake in America and they'll fight like hell to spike La Raza and Atzlan. The grand majority didn't march North to bring Mexico up with them.

Hey HARRY:
I AM NOT A RACIST. I AM AN AMERICAN. SPEAKING ENGLISH OUGHT TO BE THE NORM IN A COUNTRY WHERE MOST PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH.

I am under the impression that this bill (Inhofe's bill)has no teeth to it. That it is all symbolic and that forms and such will continue to be printed in other languages.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

It's the language our Constitution was written in. Oh and it's the language the Atomic Bomb was invented in too.

That's right. I know a lady at Church, a legal immigrant, who came from Nicaragua as a child...she said she considers most of Latin America to be a hell hole and she doesn't want to see the USA become a third world hell hole too.

Why is Senator Reid such a, well, weasel? Why does he insist on whining and complaining instead of acting like a man with some guts?

When my family came here from Italy in 1906 they were all anxious to learn English and they gave their kids English names. And there were no ESL courses at the local community college then 'cause there weren't any community colleges. They wanted to become AMERICANS not ITALIANS.

Senator Reid, it would be wise for you, sir, to gain some perspective about our nation and its history.
