Actually, this is exactly the character that continues to make our country great. Those that have been in the USA the longest have always tried to keep as much of it as they can to themselves, and rightly so. It's human nature, regardless of race. I have never been one to compare our culture and destiny to Rome's. I always hold on to the hope that the best is yet to come.
After skimming though thousands of posts on this thread for the last two days, yours was well worth stopping at and taking the time to read. It truly inspired me and refreshed my hope for America.

Thank you and God Bless America, no matter what size or shape her future holds.

I certainly share your hope that this country never shares the destiny of the early Roman Republic. I stand by my criticism of the masses. Sure, people should be able to enjoy what they've worked for. However, they should also have some sense of responsibility for serving the nation that's made this life possible for them.

The point I was trying to make last night (in my semi-sleep-deprived state) is that complaining about our leaders is healthy, but criticism should be accompanied by new ideas and initiatives. If people don't like what's on the political menu, they should get in the kitchen, not throw their plates at the baker. That's exactly what the people Pukin Dog and I were addressing are doing.

I share your optimism about America's potential, but potential needs to be tapped. My hope is that there are enough people like you and Pukin Dog willing to stand out from the (alternatingly complaining and complacent) masses and take action.
