Regarding Dems...don't think that holds true today.Depends on whether you're talking about the leadership or individuals.
My mother is a democrat and you never saw a more conservative person.

It is good. But the border is 2000 miles long. 83 miles are currently fenced. This means that 453 miles will be fenced. Which means that 1547 miles will not be fenced.
Yeah, but if you've ever driven out there, it's clear that this fence will stop most of the current crossings. There's some real moonscape out there in those other 1547 miles.
It's a start. And, unlike immigration bills which are only revisted every 20 years, border security legislation can be beefed up every year.
I try not to be a 100%er. Hopefully, the House will insist on 1000 miles of fence and they can settle on 750.

Current estimates are that we have 11-12 million illegals. It has been almost twenty yrs since Reagan's amnesty. Hence, about 550-600,000 Illegals get in each year. We detain and deport 1.2 Million per yr. Thus, if 1.8 million try and 1.2 are caught about a third make it.
These are rough estimates but seem to be close to reality.

I don't quite follow your reasoning. Sessions made the Senate bill presumably more attractive to the House with the partial wall thingie. That was his amendment no, or am I all mixed up?
The real issue is the one step versus the two step, or some sort of one and a half step, where things go real slow, until step one (staunching the flow) is achieved. The idea of putting guest workers on a path to citizenship also seems insane. Another insanity is this attempt to distinguish and figure out who has been here how long. Then the parents and the kids and the clan get to pop on in. A final insanity is that the learn English requirement, means enrolling in an English class. Please! The whole thing is a cruel joke and an embarrassment. And the numbers in play, are massive, just massive. Bush and the Senate majority must think voters are stuck on stupid or something. JMO.

deducting say $10,000-25,000 from remittances back to MexicoThere are a lot of countries where I'd like to see US foreign aid dry up. Many more of a priority than Mexico, IMO, but I get your drift. I hope we hang tough with the Palestinians, for instance.

No talk whatsover about the Canadian border? Strengthening the northern border is great, as that side also presents a threat. But seeing as how that's where approximately 500,000 illegals out of the 11,000,000 are coming from, I'd say the 10,500,000 coming from the southern border, where there's also an increase of "OTM's" by 137%, deserves greater attention.
Which side do you think makes more sense to focus plugging before the whole country drowns?
A much different picture at northern border: Canada
By Mason Stockstill | DECEMBER 18, 2005
Immigration experts estimate only a fraction of illegal immigrants who come into the country do so through the northern border. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates out of roughly 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, fewer than 500,000 are from Canada.

That was his amendment no, or am I all mixed up?You've got it right, but I guessed that onyx meant that the Sessions amendment would lead the House to stand strong with President Bush. It doesn't make much sense any other way.

Though why anyone here would want the House to stand strong with GWB as he flushes the GOP majority down the toilet for a generation is an open question..
