Mr Howard told the lunch that Australian and US forces first fought together in 1917, beginning a shared partnership in military conflict unbroken to this day

The Battle of Hamel, 4th July 1918, was in fact the first time Australians and US troops fought together - though obviously we were allied the moment the US entered the First World War. The date was not a coincidence - Lieutenant-General Monash chose it to honour our American allies.

You know, I love Australia, but really, what the hell can we do? People hate us if we act, they hate us if we don't act, it's crazy. And frankly, the vast majority of countries not only don't want us to lead, they actively work against us. Nothing personal John, but let someone else pick up the flag and run with it for a while.
