President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

Tough stuff..the Americans are closing their borders with compassion. Something even a Frenchman can appreciate if he is wise.

That's fair.

My own personal view on the border is that the Latino invasion is filling the country up with poor, family-conservative Catholics.

Yes, they will vote Democrat and socialist economically, BUT as they become more and more dominant, and eventually near parity with whites, they will drag the Democratic/socialist party towards family values and away from abortion.

I observe that abortion is illegal in every Latin American country except Communist Cuba.

So this, for me, is the silver lining of even uncontrolled immigration.

That said, I recognize the sincerity of the BorderBots, and I understand that everything is going to be lost to the Republicans if they bolt. I think many are going to, thanks to tonight's speech.

Back in September 2001, THE NEW AMERICAN

So now we are using the John Birch Society, the looniest of the loony right as a source of FreeRepublic. This is just amazing.

So you expect the US to erect a fence 2,000 miles long that would somehow be impenetrable?

Yeah, but the wall would be a billion feet high, covered with barbed wire and electric. And there would be 1,000 feet deep moat with crocodiles for every yard along with electric eels and pirahanas.

Of course, it would take a half a trillion dollars and about 20 years to build.

I like the electronic monitering idea. Put fences in some areas and use Technology for the rest. In that way there would not be adverse affects on the natural migration of wildlife.

"Jim Robinson wrote the foreward for a book, "Hillary's Secret War" and FR is mentioned prominently. The book details how the owner of this site was able to trace where posters were coming from the in the late 90's."

Reading that book is how I came to find FreeRepublic.

I was impressed with both the book, and the forward, the website was listed, I lurked for one whole day and signed up.
Best site on the web in my book ( if I ever write one...lol).

"This Presidents main concern in immigration reform, is for granting amnesty to the 15 million illegals living in the US today. All other aspects of immigration reform are secondary concerns to Bush."

Sorry, I have nothing, factually from Bush over six years to tell me this and much to tell me that not granting amnesty is not his "main concern".

He slimes every loyal GOP who wants enforcement first with the false claim that they want a massive one-time deportation of all 12 million illegal immigrants.

He fails to admit that taking the steps to actaully enforce the existing laws would not amount to an immediate and massive deportation of anyone. But, as more and more employers of illegals met the legal punishments for doing so, "illegal" job openings would gradually decrease and over time many illegals would gradually return home, voluntarily; get back in the legal line and eventually return, legally - all within current law, with no "reforms".

Bush knows that the legal loopholes in the "comprehensive" reform bill make any "reform" aspect of the bill tantamount to amnesty in all but name. One of the amendments, by Senator Durbin requires that all current immigration judges be replaced by a new position staffed by those in the legal profession currently serving as legal advocates for immigrants - kinda like putting the fox in charge of the hen house.

That item is just the tip of the iceberg and the only thing really "comprehensive" about the Senate proposed, Bush backed bill is how comprehensively the Senators have hidden the destructive nature of the bill in its 400 amendments.

"Comprehensive" is no more than a Bush, McPain, McKennedy talking point and it reveals nothing of the actual substance of the bill.

Why don't you actually get a copy of the bill or read some reports on it instead of mouthing the spin of its promoters?

Try this for starters:

Put fences in some areas and use Technology for the rest.

The problem is that the technology could be ignored by those who don't want the border to be closed.

Not as amazing as your citing the Southern Poverty Law Center and Morris Dees as god's honest truth.

Well, welcome. Glad you found us.

I had just bought a computer and called my sister and asked where the good conservative web sites were. She recommended this one.

I have not been on this thread until now due to no doubt what transpired during the speech.

So, I will say it now.

Dubya had a solid speech that recognized the BALANCE involved in immigration policy. If I say so myself, those who call for closing the borders and not allowing any immigration frankly need to get a heart. These people are desperate to get here.

However, at the same time, we are a nation of laws, and we are not going to reward lawbreakers. That is why Bush said those who want citizenship and come here via a guest worker program or other means will be at the back of the line, and they will have to learn what it is to be American and pay a penalty for coming here illegally.

However, just sending them all back does NOT send the message that America should be sending, a message that we are a nation of love and caring, a melting pot willing to take in those wanting the American dream.

Was there more I wish Bush would have done? Yes.

I would have liked to see plans for a REAL fence. I would have liked to have seen plans for 15,000 troos, not 6,000. I would have liked to hear even tougher requirements for the path toward citizenship. I would have liked to hear tougher demands on companies that hire illegals.

But, overall, the speech was very well done and the plan brings together all the different requirements of tackling the immigration problem.

Remember: this president is still better than Ronald Reagan on the immigration issue, and Reagan is considered a conservative hero. Those who would hate Bush for his stance here need to reconsider their love for Reagan, unless you enjoy being hypocritical.

Alright, I apologize for the dip name calling. I have no idea how many nonviolent, non sexual predators that we have in US prison population. I do know that we have a much more accurate count on nonviolent offenders than we have on undocumented/overstaying aliens. It is offensive that anyone will call for paying free, non convicted US citizens substandard wages. And importing disadvantaged aliens to treat them the same. What happened to rehabilitating nonviolent offenders? You may not have it both ways. While you purchase your cheap Chinese plastic crap and rail against US prison labor, the hyprocacy is obvious. All the while you condemn me for advocating the US military overthrow of the Mexican government. Their people would reap immediate benefits, the least of which being humane emigration from Mexico. The only people that perceive a manual labor shortage are those that have never dealt with a callous, blister, or Plantars wart.

"It might just work very, very well, as Israel's wall has worked.
So, why all the resistance?"

A question I keep asking. Why such resistance to something that has no real downside. Even if it is only partly effective isn't it worth trying? It makes you think people, like many of our political elite, really are not interested in controlling our border.

An Israeli type fence with 10,000 more Border Patrol agents, about $1 billion a year, and enforcement of employer sanctions would bring the deluge to a trickle.
It does seem many do not want to see this happen.
