May 15, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In his live, nationally televised address tonight, President Bush will tell Americans that it's impossible to deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens living here.
"We must reject amnesty, but recognize that it is not realistic to round up millions of people and send them home," said White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri in a preview of Bush's speech.
She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do." Bush plans to visit the U.S.-Mexican border this week, and will dispatch his Cabinet to help sell the immigration plan.
The Senate plans to return to the contentious issue this week now that Republicans and Democrats have a deal to plow through controversial amendments. But the House and Senate are far apart on whether to put illegals on a path to citizenship.
Tamburri said Bush would call for "better equipment, increased funding, and advanced technology" to secure the border.
She didn't confirm press reports that Bush wants to expand deployments of National Guard Troops to step up border enforcement. Some Guard troops are already deployed in Arizona and New Mexico, but Bush is considering a big increase.
White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said that enforcement was the Border Patrol's job - but then asked whether they needed help from the Guard on an "interim basis."
"This is not about militarizing the border," he said. The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want."

Jorge will get what's coming to him when all these people become citizens and immediately start voting to return the S.W. USA to Mexico! By then, however, he'll be out of office. I wonder how much he'll miss his "home" state of Texas (which will be the new Mexican state of Tejas), as he lounges around in Kennebunkport?
I just don't think you're right. But, at this point neither of us can prove our point (or can you?).

Like I said, in the end, results will matter. Maybe we can develop a mix of technology and boots on the ground and that could be as effective as a wall. And there is one basic problem with a wall - the damn enviros will tie it up for years, as they have done with the last section in the San Diego sector. I'd like to see a wall, but I'll settle for a serious effort to improve the current sieve.
Did you listen to Newt on Sunday...he had some logical ideas....You don't have to round up illegals...just cut off their funding at they go back home....
Absolutely!
I think the issue is deeper than that. Of course the left is happy to fan the flames of disagreement in the camp of their enemies, but they did not create the flames. The issue of illegal immigration has literally forced its way into the arena of public debate, driven by great upset in states which have borne the brunt of it. It is not a creation of the left.
I have read a number of your posts on this issue, and as always, your remarks are clear, logical and reasonable. In this case it seems to me that living in the midwest has somewhat insulated you from the real nature of the situation. I expect even there you see groups of men waiting at certain locations, hoping for a day's work; or see them widely-employed in local agriculture. About where California (my home state) was 30 years ago.
Now, the middle class is leaving California, as it can, as the state's population increases by a million illegals a year. The public schools that used to be among the nation's best are now among the worst, and in many areas, the most dangerous. The building trade workers, once all American citizens, are now all illegals. Hospitals, public safety, taxes... well, enough; I'm belaboring the point.
And this is not an issue that is the president's fault. GW is just who happened to be in office when the issue hit critical mass. If I had to guess, I think that he considers his most important task to be the prosecution of the WOT and is not willing to take on any domestic problem that will compromise his ability to do that. His admirable attempt to get social security reform going, and its result, may have helped bring this home.
The heart of the issue is this: if the hard lines are not drawn, parts of the Southwestern US will become de facto parts of Mexico, populated by spanish-speaking Mexican nationals. Because if we make the current group of illegal Mexicans legal and just accept their presence, and make cosmetic gestures about securing the border, they will keep coming. Over half the population of Mexico has expressed a desire to live in the US.
When the president says, as a practical matter, we can't just boot them all out, he is saying that we just have to write off the American Southwest. We who live here find that very hard to accept.

Neah.
I read history as a hobby. When I do a comparison to Nazis, I try to base it on actual behavior and appearence. Transporting huge numbers of people under armed guard can't help but look like trains on their way to Dachau... And the enemy press will exploit it to the max.
I try not use "Nazi" for name calling. Its been used so often that it has lost its sting. In fact, if a 'Pubbie hasn't been called racist, sexist, homophobic, extremist and/or Nazi, I don't trust him.
Agreed.
No.
Thank you for answering honestly.
Do you get it now pin head?
She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do."
AARRGGGHHHH!!!
I can't handle this!
The President wants a permanent foreign underclass!! I want my sons to be able to take entry level jobs in some industry that interests them when they are teens! That is not possible now! I would like to hear correct English spoken around here! I would like to know that 50% of the people on the road are not illegally here, driving with no insurance! I'd like to know that we could use our ER for emergencies! AARRGGGGHHHH!
How can illegal aliens afford to do it?

Boots on the ground will never stop the flow and the American people know it. For one, the American people will not trust an executive branch that is very vocally open border to manage the efforts. A wall is a deterrent 24 hours a day and not susceptible to political interference.
Congress can easily pass legislation to handle any environmental concerns if they want to.
I wrote that a long time ago when I first decided to start exposing the fear salesmen who have no ideas, just fear for sale. It remains true today.
OK let's boot Bush!
HOLD ON!!!! Can't boot Bush. We'd lose another republican vote. I suggest instead that we legislate a $100 immigration rebate check to all Americans. You'll see. The problem will simply go away.
Apparently I don't really care enough about your point to read it again. Oh well.

I don't want a wall at any height.
Sad to say, reality seems to be that we do need a HIGH AND DEEPLY DUG WALL.
Please define bashing. Thanks.

This bears repeating.
