May 15, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In his live, nationally televised address tonight, President Bush will tell Americans that it's impossible to deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens living here.
"We must reject amnesty, but recognize that it is not realistic to round up millions of people and send them home," said White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri in a preview of Bush's speech.
She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do." Bush plans to visit the U.S.-Mexican border this week, and will dispatch his Cabinet to help sell the immigration plan.
The Senate plans to return to the contentious issue this week now that Republicans and Democrats have a deal to plow through controversial amendments. But the House and Senate are far apart on whether to put illegals on a path to citizenship.
Tamburri said Bush would call for "better equipment, increased funding, and advanced technology" to secure the border.
She didn't confirm press reports that Bush wants to expand deployments of National Guard Troops to step up border enforcement. Some Guard troops are already deployed in Arizona and New Mexico, but Bush is considering a big increase.
White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said that enforcement was the Border Patrol's job - but then asked whether they needed help from the Guard on an "interim basis."
"This is not about militarizing the border," he said. The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want."

There ya have it.
Not only did we perform the same services at comparable prices, but we didn't load the system with under-the-water-line social costs that threaten to bankrupt certain border states.
Sounds like you have a problem with the laws that the elected idiots made. Has nothing to do with the people who naturally will pick up money laying on the ground.
'Policy of Attrition' Bump!
The employer thing may work to an extent but even then you've got to catch them first and the future even without a job here is better in most cases than with a job there.
Yes we could and make the economy boom at the same time. It all comes down to a simply conservative idea:
If we cut taxes by 2/3 and government spending/programs/employees by 1/3 (along with the bureaucratic processing time to admit guest workers that are standing in line), and then spent the additional funds immediately on the border and employer-enforcement, the economy would boom so greatly that the illegals would deport themselves in order to get into (the now faster) immigrations line in order to get a great American job at more than 60 measly dollars per day. Conservatism is a win-win situation, always. Sadly though, we don't have a truly conservative party representing us in Washington so we are stuck with the status quo.
There would be a lot less hoopla. No legislation is better than bad legislation.
Thanks... I wonder if NM and California will participate...?
If he is going to ask for Prime Time TV Converage for the FIRST TIMW in his Presidency on a Domestic issue...
It had better be BOLD, and NEW and BIG. If it is window dressing and nothing really new this will be a MAJOR FLOP because people will only scratch their heads.
If you do the employer bit, you'll be able to serve all the illegals breakfast in bed every day they remain here - you won't even have to slap them on the wrist.
Each one will be gone in a week.
Why would you call it a silly story? I'm trying to have a civil debate, and you call it silly. I'm sorry you find it so.
And, I was making between 6 and 8 dollars an hour (yes, with a college degree--this was in about 1989-1990). And, no benefits.
susie
I've been here since Nov. 2000. I've never seen anything more divisive on FR than this. Some days, I ask myself.....would today's FR be capable of garnering enough collective fellowship and effort to result in another "Sore Loserman" or "Get Out of Cheney's House" FReep?
...yeah...let hillary get the nomination...
That isn't true in my town.
Hey, the National ID card.
Thanks for proving point about government expansion.
Pssst. By the way, if you are going to call people idiots, be careful not to resemble on youself.
I'm sure that George Soros, MoveOn, Democratic Underground or the DNC will be only too happy to supply you with one.
At the grocery store where I shopped yesterday, the bagger was saying to the cashier that he wanted to be a cashier. She said you are too young. You have to be sixteen. Neither one of these employees was speaking Spanish. There ARE jobs that American high school kids can do. In some public high schools Many of the juniors and seniors go to jobs after school. The unavailability of jobs has become some sort of accepted wisdom, but very little first hand proof have I read anywhere.

I know..that's what turned me..even tho I know full well they were coached by the Dems, you can't get that many people to agree with you overnight.
I have some Christian Mexican friends and I know they are for the most part good people. I just wish someone along the line..Dem or Republican would have thought to let more of them in legally. Bush seems to keep getting the job of cleaning up decades of every other admins messes.
We really do need to increase our numbers as a result of our abortion losses to survive globally and economically..but it should have been done aboveboard.
Sure, cut and run in the face of AQ.
Good strategy
First, Dennis, you need to get that law passed by the Congress. The President can't just declare new punishments. He's not Stalin.
You see the problem is that you have actually thought this one out. The prospect of the American government rounding up and deporting people scares you, as well it should.
The people you find spouting off, don't have any concept of what deportation would actually mean. They also don't seem to have much of a concept of 11 million.
There is no final solution to this problem that does not involve a vastly richer Mexico. The funny thing is that this doesn't really seem to ever cross people's minds as the rant about how horrible NAFTA has been.
