U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, told a Liberty University gathering Friday afternoon that the United States cannot afford to lose the war in Iraq. McCain told about 150 invited guests attending a reception in his honor that insurgents in Iraq are trying to destroy Americas will to see the current military mission through to a successful conclusion.
McCain came to Lynchburg Friday night and will deliver Liberty University commencement address this morning. McCain said there are signs that Iraq is starting to stabilize. He said some communities in Iraq are peaceful and that the Iraqi economy is starting to improve. He said the down side is the continuing sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shiites.
We must win. We must win. We must win, McCain said. We must stay the course. He said the United States cannot afford to back away from the insurgents. They want to drive us out of Iraq and follow us here, he said.

We are fighting a war within our borders. A war on morale, and it is sad to see so many conservatives caving in on FR. So very, very sad.
If it is so obvious, why are so many here on FR caving in to dispair?
He needs to make that more known to his friends in the mainstream media.
Who is in despair?
Oh, there are the lot of FReepers who dislike Bush... but they've been despairing since April of '03, when Bush didn't authorize the razing and salting of Babylon... I mean Baghdad.
Because even here, so few have ever worn the uniform of this nation and taken an active roll in defending America. They just don't get it. In 3 years of combat we have suffered less than 2500 dead, when before Operation Iraqi Freedom started, estimates ranged from 10,000 to 25,000 projected dead.
We lost 4,000 men a week during World War 2. I wonder if some Americans would have caved then...
We have grown fat and lazy... and our enemies know it and are counting on it for victory. God help us!

I think you are only partially correct. Look at our military, all volunteer and doing a fantastic job. We still have some good people in Washington, even if we forget it at times.
Assuming that's true for the sake of argument (and it's spelled "despair"), the lack of heart that some may have for achieving the goal doesn't necessarily make the goal any less worthwhile -- or obvious.
I have to agree with you. It would just about kill me to vote for him but I won't vote for a RAT and a third party vote is just a waste.
I really don't think he'll be our nominee though because he's not going to much of the Conservative vote, I don't think.
4 guys named John. McCain, Kerry, Murtha, Conyers. None of them should be President, ever. But in the 4 named, when it concerns matters of national security and war, I'll take McCain.
"Well" Mo S&*t Mr McCain!
McCain hasn't been principled on many issues, but I at least give him credit for being consistent on defending America and her values.
Is it somehow more of a news story when McCain says we shouldn't lose the war than when normal people say it?
