Senate leaders reached an agreement yesterday on immigration reform legislation that would strengthen border security but also would allow millions of illegal aliens who have been in the U.S. for two years or longer to apply for citizenship. Derided by conservatives as "amnesty," the proposal could be amended but senators on both sides of the aisle say they doubt it will be dramatically altered. "Senate Republicans are united in their commitment to an open and full debate on multiple amendments," said a statement from seven Republicans who represent the full spectrum of positions on immigration reform. "We are willing to put differences aside so we can get on with the important work to be done securing our borders and grappling with the 12 million illegal immigrants currently living in our country," said the group that included Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. "We are also in agreement that efforts to curtail the debate prematurely will only derail this process. We call on Senate Democrats to allow an open debate and votes on this complex and challenging issue," the statement read. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, with whom Mr. Frist has been negotiating for weeks, said he "welcomed" the return of the thorny bill to the floor.

I know what you mean.
Suddenly I find myself Persona non Grata on a lot of FR threads and I slowly figured out it was my position on the borders; even though I've never trashed the President or been one to say I'll vote for a dem or third party (because I won't), just being on the side of the Minutemen, and the sovereignty of our country, was enough for me to get my hand slapped this week.
I always thought respectful debate was what made a country stronger; obviously I've been wrong.
Yeah, now you've got the scarlet letters 'MM' on your forehead.
If the RNC would lift the taboo on the issue, then voila! We could all get along again.
Heh heh, that's a little far-fetched but you get the idea.
What threads are they?
Frankly, I'm surprised that has happened; everybody seems to be getting along well, except for the immigration threads.
"Also, what would you do to the illegal alien parents of three U.S. citizens - their oldest is a doctor, their middle child is 2 years into West Point, and the youngest is set to graduate as valedictorian for high school this June?"
Send mom and dad back to Mexico to apply for reentry the right way.
That is one way to solve the problem with illegals, just make them legal and "poof" the problem is gone.
Now that they have dealt with "the people's concerns" they can get back to work on raising campaign funds and taking all expense paid "tours" of various spots around the world to further inform themselves on the conditions on the ground.
AFTER you find out how they got that kid into West Point.
It was probably a democrat congressman appointment.
I dont know about "auto citizenship" but to Somalis he gave them "Voter Cards" upon entry. Somali co-workers had talked about it to me in 1999 and during the Election 2000 (Bush/Gore) there were Somalis in my city voting in the presidencial election and a few that I know of were here in the US only months. One guy voted and he was only here 3 months. He was very informed...he actually knew all of JFK's cabinet members. He said he learnt english reading Newsweek in his country. He was 100% pro-democrat and after Bush finally won he told me "I'm very disapointed in the Supreme Court's decision."
We are basically in an era where if they are here...they will vote and if you complain the ACLU will protect them and mark you as a "racist". There is no longer such a thing as "citizenship" now. If you're here, you're no different than those born in the USA. It's a shame. But true.
I think it was Mike Gallaghet or Laura Ingraham who mentioned this on thursday but beginning next week or the week after there is a major campaign to register illegals to vote. It's a liberal organisation doing it and they will tour coast to coast through the spring and summer with a goal of resgistering 1 million illegals before November. If anybody can remember the source of this story can you post the source and/or URL to me?

Two years: I guess Hillary!
Who is Eligible to Sponsor a Parent?
If you are a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old, you are eligible to petition to bring your parents to live and work permanently in the United States. If you are a lawful permanent resident, you are not eligible to petition to bring your parents to live and work permanently in the United States.
So if the kids are U.S. Citizens and over 21, the parents are home free. That's the law.
Is this a great country, or what?
Replacing GWB may not be so far-fetched after January when the new congress takes over. Speaker Pelosi may have something to do about it. I don't think she wants President Cheney however.
Based on his position (GWB's) respecting the invasion of criminal aliens, I think articles of impeachment are constitutionally appropriate. Whether or not he gets the boot is another thing entirely.
I for one will stay home on election day. I will not vote for a Democrat but I can not support any Republican, even from NH who is running for national office, if any bill smelling of amnesty passes the majority party. I can smell amnesty because it stinks. I will however vote on the local and state ballots and I will vote Republican, but then again, the locals are conservative.
After 911 I truly hoped he would change his mind on the open border ideas or, if nothing else our GOP congress and senate would fight him on this idea. The Congress, for the most part is doing pretty good at trying to do something, but the Senate is my biggest disappointment.
What I am not going to do -- and it dismays me to read it on here -- is vote third party or Dem to "show them" over this issue. I'm also very lucky the Trent Franks has been pretty reliable on the issue as is Jon Kyl and John McCain -- well, what can anyone say about John McCain, I'm sorry he was virtually unopposed in '04, because I would have voted for a good conservative instead of McCain, I cannot and will not vote for a dem...
I hate what has happened here on FR over the immigration issue and don't quite understand why the people who want strong border enforcement are all of a sudden considered to be a troll.
I have supported most everything (99%) of the President's actions since he was elected, the whole immigration debate is leaving a very bad taste in my mouth and I can't help thinking if what we are seeing on FR is any indication of the party in general, the Dems must be wringing their hands in pure joy to see conservatives going after each other like this.
The owner of this web site is on record as supporting President Bush and the GOP.
BTW, do you realize that some of the very people on these immigration threads -- your friends -- send Freepmail to anybody who comes on these threads telling them to get off of "your" threads?
Try not to be such a victim.
Howlin, I have never sent freepmail like that to anyone, nor would Im that's not my place. d I have never said that I don't support the GOP and our President, I do.. what I do is disagree on immigration. Heck, I don't agree with my husband on everything, most things, but not everything, I'm not going to throw him to the wolves because I have something I don't agree with.
Some of your friends have.
Damn how far back do we go impeaching past presidents for that heinous crime. You really need to get a grip.
While I may agree with certain people on FR about immigration, I strongly disagree with the FR's on the same threads who say they hate the President or will vote 3rd party or not at all. I refuse to sink to that level, it solves nothing.
I know there is a lot of things you and I agree on, we just happen to disagree on immigration, that doesn't mean I dislike you or don't want to ever be on a thread with you, because it doesn't..
The President already possesses the power to grant a pardon to each and every "illegal" that he wants to under the Constitution.
Instead, he is supporting a plan to try and get control of a bad situation that preceded him into office. This plan calls for those already here (and not going anywhere anyway) a chance to EARN the right to stay here and eventually become citizens rather than staying in the black market where they can get away with not paying their way.
I simply believe that it is time to unravel the mess and that this plan is better than any that will come from a Dem Congress or President in the future.
See for yourself - I will admit that many of these are repeat offenders but we are doing SOME deportations at least:
