Senators Reach Deal to Revive Immigration Bill
LA Times ^ | May 11, 2006 | AP

WASHINGTON -- Senate leaders reached a deal today on reviving a broad immigration bill that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens and said they'll try to pass it before Memorial Day.

The agreement brokered by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Minority Harry Reid, D-Nev., breaks a political stalemate that has lingered for weeks while immigrants and their supporters held rallies, boycotts and protests to push for action.

Key to the agreement is who will be negotiating a compromise with the House, which last December passed an enforcement-only bill that would subject the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to felony charges as well as deportation.

I hear you, but why do all of this damage by having anything to do with the McKennedy amnesty scheme? Why is the President so enamored with the McKennedy amnesty scheme? Why make the Republican Party and the Republicans in the Senate look so terrible now just to hopefully make the Democrats look terrible just before the November elections? I'm not convinced.

Meanwhile, just ask any Border Patrol agent, border intrusions are going way up as promises of amnesty, "earned" citizenship, etc. are drawing them across in huge numbers. It is overloading Border Patrol and hurting border communities like mine. Why make the problem WORSE just to make the Democrats look bad in November and not pass any real Border Security legislation this year? Even if your theory is valid, I don't like the damage being done just to hurt the Democrats in November. The means is not justified by the end. I want the Democrats and other leftists of any party to lose, I want conservative Republicans to win, but I don't believe that it is worth all the damage being done.

Amnesty is back in the Senate, huh? Frist and Reid: read our lips: this will get passed over our dead bodies!

The house is on C-Span right now on a amendment to put the Armed Forces on the border.

"There's still hope with the House if they hold fast."

It's our only hope.

People do generally have short memories, so a move to secure the border right before the elections could pay huge dividends for the GOP. That doesn't mean that they really care about the borders, it just means that you can only ignore political reality for so long; and it's the only move that would really make any sense. Their weak attempts at pretending to care about the borders while doing nothing to secure them certainly doesn't make much sense.

"If this passes, the Republican Party can kiss majority status goodbye."

For a very, very, very, very, very, long time.

Don't you agree, um, Mr. President?
"Why, yes, I certainly do--is my `guest worker' program in it?"
'Sure, sure it is. Damn but that was close, wasn't it? 80% of the American public, those yokels oppose amnesty, but we shoved it through. Drinkie poo, George?'
"You bet Ted! But we're gonna crack down on new guests, right? A fence?"
"Sure sure (hic) yessir, you can count on it. Now that, uh, we've go this taken care of, uh, George, let's re-visit gun control, what do you say? (Glug glug glug)"
"Sure Teddy--gee you're swell! Wanna meet my Dad?"

Your answer is on your TV set every Sunday morning.

You have the MSM calling Pelosi "Speaker". You have Dems prematurely announcing their impeachment plans (which will be played back in commercials this October), you have Howard Dean reminding America what Democrats are really like, while he spends all the DNC money, and figures he can make a point or two on the 700 Club.

Overconfidence KILLS!

This fall, Karl Rove is going to put the Dems out of business.

But killing the Republican Party in the process and doing irreparable damage to our country may be the cost. The means is not justified by the end.

Ok, that's it. There can NOT possibly be any conservatives left in these parts. Celebrating because Hillary supports building a wall?? Think about it!

Yes it is.

I jog on an exercise trail that features a very attractive woman who stretches for a long time but never has been seen to actually run. No one complains though.

When this bill stalls in committee, you are going to see illegals marching in the streets again, flush with support from the Democrats. The public will react in horror, and vote against Democrats for their support of lawlessness.

And Senator Hillary Clinton will arrive to save the day by further pushing 'her' suggestion that a wall be built and the party that will actually get it done is none other than...[drum-roll]...the party of the people...[drum-roll & cymbal crash] the Democrats! She's already working on this, PD. Is that a flaw in your theory or a flaw in my thinking?

Your flaw, is that I am talking about 2006, not 2008. You are right about what Hillary will do, but it cant help her in 06, but it will destroy her in 08, because she will be just that much more hated by the radical left.

Oh, it's a lot worse than not building a fence. The bill set to be passed by the Senate allows all 11 million illegal aliens to bring their wives and kids over. And that permission is explicity NOT subject to the several hundred thousand/year limit that applies to the legal residents who play by the rules.

It is estimated that the bill will let approximately 30 million Mexicans into the U.S. under this bill. That's a third the population of Mexico that will be moving to the U.S.A. Meanwhile, if you have a green card and want to bring in your spouse, Immigration is just now processing applications submitted 10 years ago. If you apply now, it's going to be a 20 year wait for your spouse and kids to come here. If your child is a newborn, he or she will become adults, cease to be dependents, and be ineligeible to immigrate to the U.S.

Boy, is this law fair to legal immigrants.
