Is President Bush Done or Can He Make a Comeback?
The O'Reilly Factoid ^ | May 8, 2006 | Bill (the Leprechaun) O'Reilly

Posted on 05/09/2006 12:28:11 PM PDT by TBP

Is President Bush done or can he make a comeback? A new Gallup poll has the president's job approval rating at just 31 percent, the lowest ever for him. Only 52 percent of conservatives approve of the job Mr. Bush is doing and that's his base. Only four presidents have scored lower approval ratings since the Gallup poll began tabulating Oval Office performance: Truman, Nixon, Carter and Bush the elder. The question now is: Can Bush the younger regain the confidence of the American people?

Now there's no clear answer to that question. But one thing is certain: Mr. Bush can only turn things around himself. No surrogate can do it and the president must speak directly to the folks because the press isn't going to help him. We all know that.

Here's what the president must do right now:

Go to the Southern border and announce concrete steps to stop the millions of people trying to illegally cross into this country. Whether it's a wall or the military or a massive deployment of Border and Homeland Security agents, securing the border is a must if the president wants to win back conservative support.

Hold monthly press conferences about Iraq only. Open with specific remarks on what progress is being made and answer all questions directly. Demonstrate he has the Iraq situation under control.

Appeal to the oil companies to hold the line on pricing and quickly develop ethanol. We're fighting a War on Terror in this country. Profiteering on a vital necessity cannot be allowed. Get tough with big oil, Mr. President.

Stop the spending madness. Cut back discretionary spending by 10 percent now by issuing an executive order. Push to make tax cuts permanent.

I agree with most of what O'Reilly is saying here. The Republicans don't seem to understand that conservatives are upset and abandoning them in droves, and this is likely to cost them in November. They had better understand this. But they're Republicans, people with a virtually infinite capacity for learning the wrong lesson.

But he is suffering from severe cranial-redctal inversion if he really thinks the oil companies are to blame for teh gasoline price situation.

Doesn't matter what the polls say, I am done with GWB, and any other Republican who does NOT want to enforce our immigration laws.

Flame on

yep, Bush and the rest of our Republican leaders don't get it that we want 100% conservatives in charge. We need leaders, not wimps and lately it seems our leaders seem to scared to do what we put them in office for.

Bush done? I pray he isn't and I pray that he changes before it is to late!

We might be upset but there is no way the pubs will elect a dimwitt. His ratings are due to the 'main stream' press with wall to wall negative attacks by them.

Bush has ample time to recover a win. All he has to do is end trade agreements that have not brought good paying jobs to America, complete his promised Israel Palestine two state peace solution, cut the cost of government, issue an EO requiring illegals to register as Republican voters, have Rumsfeld to do a shuck-n-jive press conference on how Iraq insurgents sticking this fingers in ink wells will bring the troops home before November and announce Mission Accomplished on the WOT and airport security lines are not needed. Don't give up yet conservatives.

LOL! And just where are those conservatives abandoning to, pray tell?

What will cost them in November is manipulation of the supposed votes--which was all decided beforehand in Davos, Switzerland.

I'm not done with Bush and the GOP - especially the GOP House members holding the line.

But Bush needs to do a lot to win back trust on immigration issues, and he's showing no sign of understanding what needs to be done. Case in point is the sudden crackdown on employers of illegals - which only happened when Bush started having trouble getting his guest worker program through the Senate.

So even if Bush went along with improving border security, he would have to prove to a lot of people that he was serious about the job, as opposed to just cracking down long enough to marshall support for his own agenda. And that, quite frankly, is going to be a tough sell.

The other thing that Bush must do is present evidence the Russians helped Saddam smuggle WMD's to Syria. Cheney already hinted that Putin is not our friend. It is time to blast the Russians and Syria for this smuggling operation. Bush must show Syria has Iraq's WMDs. Otherwise, Bush's support will go down the toilet and the GOP will lose power in the election.

He can make a big comeback if he loses the twin myths of "Religion of Peace" and "Work Americans Won't Do".

Beat up on Big Oil? Someone as ignorant and stupid as O'Reilly has no business lecturing anyone else about what to do.

Hmmmm. What about the law of supply and demand. This guy doesn't get it. Hawaii tried to inact price controls and it ended with prices per oil going higher.

No flame, but he's a typical right-moderate candidate. Gives us about 70% of what we want, judges in particular.

Compare and contrast with a Dim adminstration --- gay marriage, activist judges, trial lawyers, choking evironmental and employment regulations, HillaryCare(TM), surrender to terrorists, etc.

If Gore was president, we'd have never gone to Afganistan. We'd have shot a few missles into mud holes and then paid millions for the damage because we killed the ancient spotted dung bird and insulted muslim law.

They would take that money, taken a Paki nuke to Chicago and blown it up.

Yeah, no differance at all.

The securing of the borders is an absolute must.

All the sacrifice and work at rooting out terrorist around the globe will be for naught, if they can walk in across ANY border of the U.S.

Bush can turn it around, but he won't. He has lost almost all of his political capital. If he signs an Amnesty Bill, like he says he will, he will be toast with the conservatives.

I predict he will go done as the worst Republican President in the last 75 years except for Nixon.
