I know that there's evidence that Vikings reached Newfoundland in about 1000 AD. There was also a stone found in Minnesota that had an inscription that said there were a bunch of Norwegians there in 1362. There have been claims that this was a hoax, but the jury is still out.

As for the Mormons, there is essentially no archeological evidence for what's in the book of Mormon. And then there's this new claim, which I doubt will live up to scrutiny.

"Under the Banner of Heaven" is in re: Mormons. After I read it I was left with the impression that John Smith founded that religion so that he and his buddies could cheat on their wives and not feel bad about it b/c "it was written". Bunch of BS to me. More self-interpretation to ones own likes.
