U.S. tipping Mexico to Minuteman patrols (telling the Mexican government)

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are. According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.

"It's not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be," Mario Martinez said Monday.

"This ... simply makes two basic statements -- that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person."

Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.

"Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.

"They just basically endangered the lives of American people."

This consular notification we do has nothing to do with detention or crime.

The majority of immigration violations that the CBP does are administrative violations, not criminal violations.

If I stop an illegal from entering the country and return them to Mexico, I'm required, before returning them to Mexico, if they wish to speak to a Mexican Consular officer.

There are countries that are signature to the Vienna Convention that we are not required to ask if the illegal wishes to speak with a consular officer.

"Controlling the invasion of illegal foreign nationals is a matter of national security and the GOP are actually encouraging the invasion.

Controlling our borders is also a huge component of the WOT which again the GOP is actively derelict in it's duties.

The war in Iraq is going to be a complete waste after this as the illegal immigration issue is destroying any credibility that the administration ever had. Unless the GOP reverses course before November, the democrats are going to sweep into power and they will pull the troops in Iraq home early and allow Iran to swoop in.

The best thing we can do for our country is to warn the GOP that they are going to out of power for good unless they start listening on this issue. Of course many won't care as they will just switch parties."

I agree with you 100% and have no intention of switching parties. I guess what I'm saying is that in order to achieve what you've stated, it is important NOT to throw out the baby with the bath water, so to speak.

Aren't there enough Republican leaders who are FOR an effective method of securing the border and AGAINST 'earned' amnesty? Have they all crossed to the other side on this? I keep asking and get no answers. Do you know?

Maybe I was right. Maybe the only way D.C. is going to get the wake up call it needs, is when our illegal alien invaders decide a Revolucion is the only way to avoid having to 'earn' their amnesty and if that's what it comes down to, so be it and bring it on.

Currently, being in this country illegally IS a civil misdemeanor offense - H.R. 4437 was going to change that to a felony criminal offense - see the difference?

The vast majority of violence along that border is condoned and conducted by the Mexican Government.

Federal, State, local, and tribal law enforcement are working together. More than 600,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended through the Arizona Border Control Initiative last year - an increase of more than 50 percent over the previous year . . . The President has set a goal to end "catch-and-release" over the next year. Most illegal immigrants from Mexico can be returned to Mexico within 24 hours. Non-Mexican illegal immigrants present a different challenge. For decades, government detention facilities did not have enough beds for the non-Mexican illegal immigrants caught at the border - so most were released back into society. They were each assigned a court date, but virtually no one showed up.
