I look at tattoos this way (which is why I don't have any):
1. Tattoos last the rest of your life.
2. I do not think that the stuff I liked ten years ago is still cool.
3. Extrapolating 2 forwards, the stuff that I like now will not be cool ten years from now.
4. Therefore, any tattoo I get, which will last the rest of my life, will not be cool ten years from now, assuming that it's actually cool in the first place.

tattoos that they once thought were Chinese characters for attractive concepts like power and love but now suspect might actually say General Tsos Chicken special or gullible white boy." Or
"Hey, look at me, I'm a disfigured dumb***"

Everything you said about tattoos is true and in 30 to 40 years after you get your Asian language tattoo, you wouldn't be able to read it anyway because it will just be a blue blob.

Actually, I know of one good use for a tattoo, and it has nothing to do with coolness: Coptic Christians, particularly those living in Egypt, often have a cross tattooed on the back of their hand. Very gutsy, since it could be an invitation to martyrdom (in the true and original meaning of the word).

Tattoo's are just plain dirty. what is it today with older men and tattoos and silly ass motorcycles. Do they think it makes them look tough ???
nothing worse then a fat middle aged man on a Harley with some dumb ass tattoo. Guys the ladies are laughing at you. The men are just disgusted.

ummmm thanks for proving my point....I knew it wouldn't take too long, this is FR after all....
BTW I have 3 tattoos....All of which are in English (well one has a Latin phrase on it, but I KNOW what it means)....

Sigh.....
My girlfriend has it in her head that she NEEDS to get the number 23 tattooed on her written in Aramaic. I have researched this online and cannot find the symbol.
When I was stationed in Japan, the thing to do was get a tattoo written in Kanji. I had a bunch of Japanese friends who would laugh at the tattoos. They didn't mean what the person thought they did.
I always thought Kanji looked like someone sprinkled pubic hair on a piece of paper and copied it.

My daughter just got her first tattoo, but she doesn't have to worry about any of the problems with aging or whether it stays cool, or anything else that would make her want to remove it. The tattoo was done with an ink that is only visible under black light.

I guess I have not kept up with all of the other tattoo threads...this is the first time I have posted re: tattoos.
I can see that this can hit a nerve. I have no problems with tattoos...so long as they are placed in a clean environment by someone with some credibility(and one does not get Hep C, Hep B, a staph infection or other complications).
Also, if one chooses to get a tattoo one should realize that others may not respond to it as you would hope...certainly do not want to sterotype but depending upon the job or position you desire, it can negatively influence your chances...
